This PISSES me off! Now I know we live in a country where our electric service runs uninterrupted for months. But recenly we had an outage in the middle of the night. And it just happened AGAIN last month.

Now I have a little clock radio I put a 9-volt in to save the time. WHY can't there be something like this for my TV and VCR?

Also, it's not just the clock on your new TV's. You have to reprogram the channels and all that. So it takes like a half hour to completely reset everything in my house. Then there's Grandma's house too, but that's beside the point.

How about a rechargable battery in larger appliances that we never have to worry about that saves out clock and channel settings during brief power outages?

You have to reprogram the channels

Get a cable box.

Why isn't this thread in OT or HK?

A cable box would only solve the reprogramming of my tv. I would still have to reprogram my clocks, and the channels in my VCR.

And I placed this in the Lounge because it's a laid back topic!

All these things need whatever technology is in the PS2 that it can just figure out what the date/time is on its own.

Yea, I agree. I think it's a small battery back up, like a battery in a Motheboard or something like that. If I could save my Zelda game in the 80's, why am I reprogramming my shit everytime some asshole hits a pole or a bird pecks at a powerline?

No PS2 doesn't have a battery backup that I know about, it just knows the time. It must be synched to the atomic clock or something. You plug it in and it knows the time and date and everything!

I feel your pain. Sometimes we just have Lightning storms and we have tons of thunder storms. I have to not only reset my alarm clock and VCR clock, but the clocks on my stove and microwave. It's a pain in the ass. I think appliances should start doing what you said and make life a little simpler.

Does dog count as appliance? 'Cause that bitch barks like a fuzzy freak when the lights go out.

because the gizmo I have in my tv that sets the clock based on a broadcast signal from certain pbs channels isnt in yours. Would be sweet if there was a way for all the appliances to take advantage of something like this but it's way more complicated than this. As long as we're at it - why can't they make a photocopier that has a clock in it and knows to turn on at 8am so the first poor schlub who uses it in the morning doesnt have to wait 5 min for it to warm up?

LOL that's so true. Ahh, the joys of working.

I always thought Office Space was funny but after I started working it was hilarious.

Get a new photocopier!!
It seems like forever, but the one in my department only takes about 45 seconds to warm up after you turn it on (I know because last night at like 9 pm I needed to make some copies and the machine was off and I had to pee really bad and I was paying attention to how long it took!)

Yea, I've seent how TV's know what time it is on their own sometimes. But as Aggie brought up, the Microwave, the Stove and other things I can't think of need to be reset.

I cannot see a small battery back-up that recharges itself while plugged in costing that much, especially when purchased in bulk by a lare company like GE for instance.

An extra feature like that WOULD be a reason I'd spend 5-10 dollars more on a GE product over another product.

If I could save my Zelda game in the 80's, why am I reprogramming my shit everytime some asshole hits a pole or a bird pecks at a powerline? The Zelda game had a battery, exactly what these appliances need. If a little 20 year old cartrige can have a battery, why can a stupid 6month old vcr have one?

With that PBS thing, I can never get my TV to do that. Also, when you say you have to reset your VCR cahnnels, I only have to do that everyonce and a while, because I think my VCR and TV save the channels on them.

Also, I think the PS2s might have somekind of battery in them, because I dont think they are set to the atomic clock. My atomic clock can only sync to the time, but I have to set the date.

When you say you need a clock on your copy machine, why dont you buy one of those outlet timers. The thing would turn on set to the time you set. I guess the only bad thing is that the machine would turn on on the weekend (if you dont work on the weekend). You might be able to find an advanced one that works mon-fri 8am-8pm or somthing. I have one of those for my house lights outside, but it's some $100 thing installed into the wall in my basement, rather some crappy thing you buy from K-Mart.

Well the PS2 is synching itself to SOMETHING cause I never had to set the initial time/date.

I still don't know why this is either, or for that matter why they can't have a feature that adjusts for daylight savings time. Considering we have to put in the date in the vcr, it should know to adjust the time accordingly.

Yeah it's such a pain in the ass. I got a new stove last week and the dude had to keep turning the power off while he did shit (two times without notice while I was on my PC!).

Had to reset my alarm clock, my mothers alarm clock, my answering machine, two television's, cable box, two VCR's, two stereos, microwave, coffee maker. What a god damn pain!

I don't consider anything a pain unless I'm willing to pay someone else to do it for me or buy a machine that does it.

When the power goes out, I just reset my alarm, the rest of the stuff gets done as I see them.

It's a really good question as it would be ridiculously easy and cheap to implement a battery backup for clocks and appliances, such as that used in your computer to keep track of your bios, CMOS, date/time and preference settings even when the computer is off (and unplugged).

The battery costs about $5 retail so the price to OEM would be negligible.
