Nowadays people seem to think that I am a prude...

I started a new job last October, and as I do at all my jobs, I turn down my personality down a couple of notches. I don't curse or make crude comments at work.

Outside of the work environment I am a real "wild child", I let all my inhibitions go.

My problem is that at work everybody sees me as this tightass who can't appreciate a joke and everybody apologizes to me whenever they curse. I was wondering what I could do to change that, to show them the badass that I REALLY am. (Something that wouldn't land me in jail or on the unemployment line:) ).

Thanks in advance

DON'T DO IT! With them apologizing to you all the time, it appears that you have what Seinfeld referred to as "Hand". As weird as that is, it gives you a certain power over your co-workers. And why do you have to impress them anyway? Just because you work with them and want to fit in? Don't do it because when you become part of the pack you become a part of every office political and personal drama that goes on. Be a "Mystery Woman"...what's more intriguing than that?

A Ron&Fez Restroom Inspection Sticker or a WOW sticker on your desk is a sure sign that you are cool without acting like a hoochie...

I gotta go with James on this one. By being the "tightass" you have a large power over your coworkers. Plus, if you stay outta the drama, you wont have to deal with all the dumbasses who know your personal biznass.

You want to try and be "cool". Not too uptight, but still keep that aura around you that you shouldn't swear, etc.

It is true what you say about having the upper hand and not falling into their drama ridden conversations...But I'm NOT trying to fit in...I could care less... I just don't want to give off the wrong impression...They see me as something that I'm really not...

With Bloomberg's "New World Order" the entire office will be shut down...and I'll be working WAY downtown in a whole 'nother field of business...Maybe I could "go out wit a bang"... I dunno...

Anyway thanks for the words.....

Whether or not you have an "upper hand" is irrelevant. You want to be perceived differently, in a way that reflects your true personality.

If people treat you as a "prude" it seems logical that you did or said something to give you this reputation. On the other hand, perhaps you're one of a few women in the company and the men are protecting themselves and trying to avoid a sexual harrassment suit.

Ultimately, you have to decide whether you really care about how your coworkers perceive you or whether you'd rather not let on to your true personality. There's certainly a lot to be said about not being perceived as a wild woman in the business world.
