I can't get through on the phone lines.

Someone stop Billy; he's carrying on about how fish can't feel pain. :)

Here's just ONE bit of proof, from the Animal Planet:

OH! and they moved on to what your favorite fish is.

Me, I enjoy scallops. mmm. Sure, they're SHELLFISH, but they're better than say...trout. ick.

I HOPE they feel pain! Smug BASTARDS!

As for my favorite fish, I am not a big seafd fan. I like my fish in Stick and Pattie form.

Actually, I really like some smoked salmon I was given once. Of course it was good, it's like $15 A POUND!

As a bigtime fisherman, I can honestly say I often wonder about this. Then, suddenly, a smallmouth bass bites and the fight is on!

If there is anyone in NYC that goes freshwater fishing, get in touch.

Its is my deep seeded hatred and utter contempt for human life that gets me through each day

When I was a kid, I used to go freshwater fishing with Dad. The ol' bastard had a rowboat, and I used to ROW THE BOAT. Took turns with whichever brother was with us.

so imagine me, an 11 - 12 year old kid in the middle of a rowboat; a slightly older kid on the other end and Dad in the back with a six pack of Miller beer and a pack of Parliaments, casting his line off of the back of the boat and muttering "get me a little closer over there..." as he points with his cigarette with the impossibly long ash on the end.

When the day was done, I gutted and scraped the scales off of the catches on the shore, leaving the guts in the water.

I didn't mind it wheen I was a kid, but I haven't had a bass, trout, pickerel etc. since I was like 14. Oh, the memories....

I need some paxil.

Billy sounded like such a fucking retard on the show tonight. "fish don't feel pain because they don't scream or cry when you gut them." I usually feel bad for Billy, but last night I wanted R&F to kick him out the studio...

Also, I love salmon. But I seem to be the only one.

Abstract

I'll post the abstract of the article here (I don't have access to the full text of the paper from home)

painless, a Drosophila Gene Essential for Nociception.

Tracey WD, Wilson RI, Laurent G, Benzer S.

We describe a paradigm for nociception in Drosophila. In response to the touch of a probe heated above 38 degrees C, Drosophila larvae produce a stereotypical rolling behavior, unlike the response to an unheated probe. In a genetic screen for mutants defective in this noxious heat response, we identified the painless gene. Recordings from wild-type larval nerves identified neurons that initiated strong spiking above 38 degrees C, and this activity was absent in the painless mutant. The painless mRNA encodes a protein of the transient receptor potential ion channel family. Painless is required for both thermal and mechanical nociception, but not for sensing light touch. painless is expressed in peripheral neurons that extend multiple branched dendrites beneath the larval epidermis, similar to vertebrate pain receptors. An antibody to Painless binds to localized dendritic structures that we hypothesize are involved in nociceptive signaling.

This "proves" (proof is a bad word in science, remember!!!) absolutely nothing about pain. Essentially what they are studying is nociception, which is a term given to the response of animals to certain stimuli that might be harmful to them. Since the can NOT tell us what they're feeling, we can NOT know if they're feeling pain. We can assume that in some cases of apparent nociception, animals may potentially be feeling pain, but there is absolutely no way to prove it until animals can talk or we perhaps know more about the brain and perception in animals.

All this paper demonstrated was nociception (as its title even states) in fly larvae. Essentially they demonstrated that most Drosophila larvae "roll" away when they're poked with something hot (hot enough to harm them/kill them). They went out and looked for mutants that don't roll away and by comparing their genetic structure with that of the "normal" (or "wild-type") Drosophila, they found out that the ones that don't roll away from the potentially death-dealing hot poker were lacking a certain gene. They called this gene "painless". Of course thy could have just as easily called it "no-nociception", but "painless" is a catchier name and easier to say. Note that HAVING the "painless" gene means that you WILL show nociception (or "pain") - fly genes are often named for what happens when you DON'T have them... it can be confusing :)

This gene, "painless", is apparently expressed (that is, is "turned on" - all genes are in every cell of the body, but only the ones you need in a particular cell get used, or "expressed") in nerve cells that are similar to vertebrate (that's us and other animals with backbones) pain receptors, and it apparently has something to do with signaling in nerve cells (it's expressed in the area of the neuron where one neuron communicates to the next one... the "dendrites")

My 2 cents on the fish-pain...

One of the definitions of Life is a Reaction to stimuli. All life forms on the planet show this response.

Now, starting from the start; we had the bacteria+viruses, then the microbes then multicellular organisms, plant life, emergence of fish, dinosaurs, mammals, flowering plants, land animals, and us.

Now do all of these 'feel pain'?

I think the problem is we're thinking about somehing that we can't fathom.
We KNOW we can feel pain, and we talk about it, in fact we abstract about it, meaning,we remember pain from the past and can think about it and even have it affect our present state. We can also abstract as to pain we might feel in the future. this may be the textbook definiton of Fear.

But we know, or at least the evidence shows so far, that many life forms can Not abstract; that is, remember the pain of the future and posit on the possibility of future pain. These life forms feel pain, but don't have a pain 'memory' or at least dont have the brains needed to feel Fear.

For me, it's the Fear Factor. A killing that is most cruel, and hence, most 'painful' when there is maximum fear. Hence the 'Pain' we talk about.

I'd say somethings are just lower creatures and have brains but are just on a sort of sleep-state, or even coma; I mean, like Dreyfus said in Jaws, for the last couple of hundred million years, sharks have been here. Now for me sharks are perfect for this. Dreyfus said a shark basically does three things: swim, eat, and make baby sharks. I think if you include shark-shitting that's about It. Yes sharks have a brain; but like fish it lacks anything but the most simple wiring; no cerebral cortex or cerebellum for higher thought, basically just enough brains to do the above. From pictures of sharks atacking fish, and each other; well they sure as hell are reacting to stimuli and the surroundings, and they seem to know that other sharks can sometimes means 'no good', but I don't sense fear, or wondering, is this gonna hurt?! Oh man I hope not!'

Now the seal getting eaten? That seal is a mammal with a highly developed brain. Certainly more complex then the shark. We see, what we think is altruism in these mammals, and highly complex social behavior. I got the feeling they are abstracting about the sharks out there, and are scared shitless.

This is subjective for me. My opinion only, on the cruel thing. It would be nice, I think, if we died quickly, minimal pain, and minimal warning. For me, a meteor would do nicely. Seiously.

Hey Mike, not to disagree with your basic premise, but...

1. Sharks don't shit, they excrete urea
2. Sharks do have a cerebellum.

i think he meant like humans have exoskeletons tecknically and most dont know. an exoskeleton is an outter covering that holds together whats in side and protects from whats outside. skin, on humans, holds all our organs in and everything like blood and veins in there place as well as keeping out diseases and certain foreign objects

Creatures with exoskeletons dont have internal skeletons to support their bodies, and so their outer covering is supporting their bodies.
