This is something I've wondered for a while. Is it the screenplay that if filmed as written would make the best film? Is it the screenplay that reads the best? Why isn't the best screenplay also the best film, and why are films sometimes in one category that aren't in the other? Wouldn't one of the best screenplays make one of the best movies? I understand you have the director's interpretation in there, but any director who can get his hands on best film script material should be smart enough not to fuck with it.

Best screenplay is based on the script.

Best film is based on the director's interpretation of the script. Scripts do not give visuals, which is why the director must interpret the script. Even if he followed the script line by line, it would only give dialogue and stage direction.

By and large, I take it to mean best story. I think however a film with strong dialogue can also win(Pulp Fiction coming to mind). And every so often, a film with a clever hook gets nominated or can even win based on the twist(Usual Suspects

How well you blow the Hollywood Foreign Press. Wait...that's for the Golden Globe.

As I have four years education in this very field, I will attempt to answer these questions to the best of my knowledge.

This is something I've wondered for a while. Is it the screenplay that if filmed as written would make the best film?

The phrasing of your question is a little awkward but I think you're close. A screenplay is judged on both its technical and artistic merits. It's actually a whole list of criterion developed by the Academy as a standard for judgement. It's a lot of wacky things like conversation of pages readability. The artistic merits are a little more nebulous and based on the tastes of the review panel.

Is it the screenplay that reads the best?

Partly, yes.

Why isn't the best screenplay also the best film, and why are films sometimes in one category that aren't in the other?

Each category has a different set of criterion for judgement. Best Film combines all the elements of filmmaking from artistic to technical, cinematography to screenplay. The award is given to the film which bests reflects a mastery of all elements. The winner is usually, but not always, indicated by the film which wins most of the major awards. Since this is ultimately a judgement call based on the tastes of the review panel, it is almost impossible to really predict a winner with 100% accuracy.

Wouldn't one of the best screenplays make one of the best movies?

Not necessarily....how many times have you seen remakes of films that don't hold a candle to the original?

I understand you have the director's interpretation in there, but any director who can get his hands on best film script material should be smart enough not to fuck with it.

You would think so. A lot of things can destroy a film...ego...budget...talent...crew...post team...

The funny thing is some of the best directors never went to college. That includes film school. Ialways found that interesting.

I always though best screenplay meant best adaptation of script into film. best film meaning total package.
