Burton Sweet on "Wonka" Remake

by Julie Keller
May 23, 2003, 2:25 PM PT

It looks like Tim Burton is ready to channel his inner Oompa Loompa.

The weird-embracing director behind The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice and Batman has received the golden ticket from Warner Bros. to helm Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a big-screen adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl children's book.

This will mark the second time the whimsical inhabitants of a magical candy factory will come to life on film. In 1971, Gene Wilder headlined Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, a movie that has become a cult classic and spawned the hit song "Candy Man."

The new adaptation has been a long time coming. Warner Bros. started kicking around the idea of a Wonka redo in 1991, but it didn't snag the rights until 1998. Apparently, Dahl detested the first film, and his family members dragged their feet on approving the second following his death in 1990

No Wilder?

NO GOOD.

Gene simply cannot be topped. A perfect performance.

If anyone could make it weird or dark it would be Tim Burton. I agree - of all the movies you could remake, why this one?

But then again, I never understood why they had to make a remake of The Shining either.

I agree with the rest of you, why mess with a classic. Look what they did with the Grinch. Fuck Jim Carrey give me the original cartoon.

We need everyone to keep spreading the word about Ron and Fez. Get you friends, coworkers, hell anyone you talk to get them to listen.

Just got done watching Wonka with my son a few hours ago...just a great innocent movie. Why remake it?

Burton will just suck the innocence out of it.

Maybe Burton will just have grandpa and Charlie (this is Charlie) explode after drinking fizzy lifting drinks.

Are you all nuts? I remember hearing a rumor a couple
of years ago that Tim Burton (who is one of my favorite
directors, BTW) was going to direct the new version of
Wonka. And that he was planning to cast Marilyn
Manson as Wonka. I was so excited. Sounded like the
most perfect combo in the world. And then I read that
it was all rumor, Burton wasn't the director, and I was
sad. Could it be that that has changed after all the
buzz the rumor started?

And for all of you talking about the "innocence" of the
original, please. If you look deeper, there is a hell of a
lot that is not innocent. I've mentioned before on here
that Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka was my first crush.
That wasn't because he was cute or anything. It was
because of his barely concealed malevolence,
mischievousness, and the way he swung that black
cane around... Wonka loved a good mind fuck. And so
do I.

It has nothing to do with innocence. Wonka was one of the most terrifying figures I had ever seen on the screen as child, and more so because you didn't expect it from him. Marilyn Manson will have NONE of that. He'll be BLATANTLY creepy and scary, because that's all he can do. And unlike Gene, he won't be able to pull out the wounded tenderness when he has to. It was like casting Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates...great actor, but he LOOKED crazy from the beginning. Characters like Winka and Norman Bates suck you in because you don't expect such sheer insanity to come from them. Maybe if Burton went with the actor he works best with, Johnny Depp, but otherwise...doubtful...

Leave it be. So what if Dahl hated the first one? Stephen King hated Kubrick's version of "The Shining"...fuck him and his dead British ass.

I lost faith in Burton as a director since his blasphemous adaptation of Planet of the Apes. This is going to be awful. The charm of the first film, Wilder aside, was the innocence of the 60's...the sets, the colors, the costumes...it was a simpler time....no doubt this version will be loaded with millions of dollars in cheesy visual effects and modern takes on 60's technology. (beaming the child through television airwaves just won't fly in this age of digitial communication and worldwide connectivity.) It will stink on ice.

This movie will suffer the same misguided fate as Lost In Space.

How can you have that movie without Carrey and Daniels? I don't care if it's a "prequel"

Shining"...fuck him and his dead British ass.

Are you saying fuck my most favorite director and his
dead British ass? Them's fightin' words, my dear Mojo.
And I'm up for a bit of the old ultraviolence. Fuck
Stephen King instead, for hating Kubrick's version of
the film when all his other books made into movies
sucked. Except maybe Stand By Me.

And though I love Burton, too, I have to agree with
FMJeff that his version of Planet of the Apes sucked
ass. Everything else he's done has been spectacular,
though.

Both these directors are more expressionists than
realists, as far as artistic vision. But I'll allow them a
Barry Lyndon and a Plant of the Apes fiasco once in a
while. Nobody's perfect.

No, I meant, "fuck DAHL in his dead British ass" for not liking the first "Wonka". I was bringing up King not liking Kubrick's film as an example that the author CAN have their head up their ass.

Thats not even close to true. While i do agree that dumb and dumberer is going to suck really bad, it will ahve at least one funny part.

A new Wonka with Tim Burton is going to have no redeeming quality.

Its like having Baz Luhrman redo the Matrix. It cant possibly work!

2 of my all time fave movies are the original "Apes" and "Willy Wonka". I DO NOT want to see Burton's screwed up version of "Wonka"!! ;(
I'm still pissed by the butchering of "Apes"!
Talking humans?! No Forbidden Zone?!

Although... there IS talk that Burton's gonna do Batman 5 with Micheal Keaton back and Howard Stern as the Scarecrow. Now that might be interesting. I'm not sayin' it will be, but might be.
