I'm eating some chocolate from Christmas. There's no expiration on it. Tastes good to me.

Is there a rule of thumb? What about shit like candy canes that are just sugar? If they stay dry, are they good for a few years?

What about shit like Lifesavers? Starburst?

I had to look this one up. According to

http://www.stuffedchocolate.com/chocolate%20links.htm chocolate bars don't spoil because they contain the antioxidant polyphenol.

However, another website, (I navigated away from the link already - sorry) makes a more reasonable claim, that if chocolate is left in a cool dark environment w/good air circulation (away from bright ligh and NOT in the fridge) it will last for 10 years. Of course, not many people have a "Chocolate Room" where they keep humidity at exactly 50% and temperature of about 65øF year round.

In a typical kitchen, you can count on up to a year for dark chocolate, and or 7 to 8 months for milk and white chocolate. (This seems like a much more reasonable claim).

I'm pretty sure that twinkies and candy canes can withstand a 1000 megaton hydrogen bomb explosion even at ground zero. And the bright green glow makes them easy to find in the dark!

EDIT: Some chocolates have been known to be naughty and "bad" chocolate is quite sexy.

Ever see the big bowl of ribbon candy at Grandma's house that NEVER changed? Yeah, it's still going even though she's dead.

King Diamond sang about his Grandma but she was TALKING to the dead.

Good thing I know this now becasue I can stock up after next Easter on the Reese's specialty treats. Now I have to wait for fucking Halloween for the next batch. Summer needs more candy related holidays so Reese's can do 4th of July Liberty Bells or even little Construction Hats for Labor Day.

Most candy is so packed with preservatives and mystery chemicals that they have a half-life of somewhere around 2,000 years. Sometimes I wonder if dropping dead batteries into a vat of liquid Sour Power Straws will make them come out recharged. I'm almost SURE Pepsi Blue can recharge batteries... I know it cleans combs pretty well.

Most candy will stay good for very long periods of time because they are largely sugar, which is hygroscopic (it absorbs water). When bacteria and mold and things actually land on the candy, the sugar in it sucks the water right out of the bacteria/mold, so it can't grow. This is also why it takes so long for things like jam to get moldy, why honey doesn't spoil (honey is also an excellent anti-bacterial - some people advocate using it instead of anti-bacterial creams on scrapes and cuts - I think I'd just end up licking it off!) and why the cake that I had in my fridge from New Years (hey Jen & Jon, I just threw it out yesterday!!!) was still fine, if a little bit dried out.

I'm sure that a combination of polyphenols and sugar in chocolate prevents it from spoiling; what you have to worry about more is that if chocolate is warmed and then cooled again it will "bloom" - get that white powdery stuff on its surface. Totally harmless but so aesthetically unpleasant!

I read an article on that in RN magazine awhile back. They're doing studies in Britain along these lines for the treatment of Decubiti ulcers.
