I was just listening to one of Ron and Fez's past shows where they brought up briefly the tourist spot of "South of the Border". When Ron said "Paco says..", it cracks me up. I past by this place all the time and how could you not miss it with it's bright lights at night and all the billboards promoting it (10 miles to South of the border, Paco says..., You've just past South of the Border). What's so big about it? I know that the souvenirs are cheap but they got like 10 stores that sell the same stuff. Besides the rides which are nothing to brag about, the ability to buy Fireworks, and supposedly renovated hotel with pool-What's the big deal?

All the signs. You get one for every mile for what seems like a hundred miles leading to the damn thing. It hypnotizes you. And then rapes you blind.

Exactly right. Years ago I read an article on this place, it was started as a gas station/liquor store by a liquor salesman who lost a major account in his territory. He figured he could do it better; he was right. It's all in the marketing.

I think it's gotta make its most money offa familes with children 12 and under. Unless you want to ducktape your kids' eyes closed for nearly two hours, you better damn well expect to be stopping at South of The Border...or else PAIN.

If you've ever gone down thru North Carolina on 95, the same thing is done by JR. You get a sign every mile, and these signs are BLUNT. They say "JR Outlet--Worlds Biggest Tourist Trap". The store sells everything from cigars to clothes to cosmetics to books and everything else you can imagine.

I thought it was Pedro says. I go to Myrtle Beach and that is all you see is South of the Border signs. Pedro weather report "Chili today Hot tamale".

JR's is ok I got some good deals on cigars in there. You definitely have to know what you are buying. They used to be really cheap for cigarettes. We can buy cigarrettes cheaper in Va than at JR's. 15-20 bucks for a carton of Marlboros, Camels, Winstons, and slightly higher for other brands.

We need everyone to keep spreading the word about Ron and Fez. Get you friends, coworkers, hell anyone you talk to get them to listen.

my grandparents took me and my brother to Ft Lauredale when I was 8(1970). we stopped there and i thought it was awesome.
Riding with my grandparents wasn't that great though, they had plastic seat covers, he smoked cigars and she smoked cigarrettes. our eyes were burning like hell and he blasted the AC and we froze ours asses off...
but they fed us like Kings...

stopped there when i was 15 when we went to see my eldest brother graduate Navy bootcamp in Orlando, the place was in bad shape. there was garbage everywhere and the place we stopped to eat at was terrible, both food and service...

been there a couple times in the past few years when going to Myrtle Beach and it seems to have cleaned up some...

no big whoop

Growing up, my family used to drive to florida to visit the grandparents. The South of the Border signs were always something to do during the ride down.
