Would Billy Staples be better off without the Ron and Fez show?

Before everyone starts to get on my case. Hear me out. I've been listening to Ron and Fez for some time now (although I can't hear them presently) the saga of Billy Staples yet continues. I know from reading some of the other post here that Billy is a good guy. But his continued relapses (even though they make good cannon fodder for the show) may be a prelude to unresolved or unexpressed feelings or issues he has suppressed. If one views the Ron and Fez show as a family, one can see that the show is one of the primary enablers that further enhance his addiction even though they care for Billy somewhat. By making his story a part of the show(sometimes the center), crticizing and humiliating Billy, abusing him (being shot with paintballs in the staples), etc. enables his destructive behavior to continue. Would Billy still be funny if he was sober or just plain boring. Billy is not blameless here because he continues to make the choices that lead to his distructive behavior due to his lack of impulse control and a part of him likes being the center of attention (be it negative). What I'm trying to get to here is (damn it's 2:00 already!) would you want a well/sober Billy Staples if it meant that, as a part of recovery, he would need to distance himself from the Ron and Fez show
(people/places/things) or see him self destruct following his continued downward spiral of engaging in activities that are detrimental to one's mental and physicall well-being.

listen to ron's concern for billy on the 5.27 show, ie. "want me to go to a meeting with you tomorrow?" granted billy's a punching bag, by his own choice. he's pursuing his dream of show biz. and from billy's stories, he was much worse back in the day. he has a ton of support; he just needs to pull it together.

Billy needs to lose everything including Ron & Fez. As long as he screens calls, he can convince himself that he is in show business and he'll think that everything is OK. Billy will keep relapsing as long as he has a job.

I am amazed that people would suggest that losing his job would help Billy. As if somehow sitting in his basement 24 hours a day with nothing to do will help. Billy will come out of this and having to show up for work is certainly better than him having time to wallow in his shit.
Billy is a great guy and has been more succesful at fighting this addiction thing than we give him credit. MOST of the time Billy is sober and in this relapse he admitted the fact that he'd been drinking and has showed up to work. This is certainly better than the disappearing.
The guy was dealt a bad hand and I for one think in the end he'll play it right.
Oh yeah one more thing, Billy IS IN show business. There are thousands of people that know his name, recognize him on the street and think of him as a radio buddy. He may not be Howard Stern or even Ron and Fez, but he's on the air and heard by more people than any of us.

The bottom line is that if Billy wants to drink, he will drink. He has been fighting himself his whole life!!!! Himself! What would you do if you didnt have that long left on the earth? What would probably help is if one of the girls of the message board throw him a piece.......cause god knows none of you girls ever banged a slob before.....

I think that right now, the Ron and Fez show is the only positive thing in Billy's life. I think he would be much worse off without it.

The unfortunate fact of the matter is that most alcoholics have to "hit bottom"-that is, lose everything and everybody around them in order for their eyes to open up. Alcoholics usually suffer from extreme denial.Last night, Billy was saying how hopeless he is and how he will never get better. Trust me, he is saying this for the benefit of those who care for him and he hopes that they will take pity on him and take care of him. Many alcoholics are masters at manipulation. The concept of tough love sounds cruel but I have seen it literally save lives and make productive citizens out of the most hardened stewbum!

As usual, I agree with everything Reeshy said above. I'd add that as long as Billy knows he has the safety net that is the Ron and Fez show, he will never truly fear "rock bottom", nor hit it. As much as they think theyre helping him by being there for him, they may actually be harming his chances for long term improvement.

Billy gets himself into these situations. Also, remember, this is radio. Half the time, Billy lets Ron and Fezzy bash him so everyone could have a good laugh every few weeks.

Ron and Fez really care for Billy, it's true they make fun of him and his troubles on the air, but Billy allows it. I feel Billy would fall victim to his demons no matter what.

I actually feel that because he is part of the RnF Family he is more likely to get help than if he were working anywhere else. We've all met Billy and hung out with him and the guys, he has all of our support as well.

Several months back Ron made a comment to the crew: Hawk, Rory, et. al. that no one is to ride Billy off the air.

Also there was a show back in December or perhaps earlier when Harry Elvis's chick friend called the show and said that Harry told her that the Guys really dig into him on the air, but off the air they are the coolest guys and really nice to him.

As usual, I agree with everything Chris said above. Billy has been protected by the staff of the show because he's "good" radio. My opinion(which most of you know already) is that , although they all have good intentions, they are inevitably hurting Billy's chances of any long-term sobriety. He thinks that as long as he is useful to the show, they will tolerate his drunken rants and nothing ontoward will happen to him. Like I said before, he is going to have to "hit bottom" before he sees the light!!!

I know in my own personal recovery I had a boss that supported me in every aspect of my life. It wasn't until after she fired me that I hit bottom. When I had cleaned up she rehired me. I think that a lot of addicts are like this, right now Billy sounds like he needs to lose everything. As Mr. Tyler Durden said "It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything. Ron once said that he knew lobsters that hadn't hit bottom as many times as Billy. Firing him is not the answer. Does anyone really think that Billy hasn't lost jobs due to his addictions before? Or friends? There are people on the show who have seen the world from where Billy is standing and repeatedly on and off the air try to help him. There are all sorts of resources available to him, it is up to him to grow up and use them.
