And I agree. I've always thought that term limits were a stupid idea. If you want to see an elected official term limited then vote him or her out of office.

What do you think?

I never thought that I would agree with anything that Clinton would say but I must say that I have to go along with this one-But not for his sake. It should also be examined on the state and local level. For instance, I'm convinced the Guiliani would still be the mayor of NY if not for term limitations here in the city. I'm not saying that the city would not be in the dire straits that it finds itself in but I think that Rudy would have found a better solution to the problem than Bloomberg has (or hasn't).

I do not agree with term limits as a mandatory policy, but I understand why they were created. End term limits, but campaign finance reform will be required to make rookies able to complete with the incumbents. As it stands right now, unless you are a millionaire you won't get elected it seems.

I never thought term limits were a good idea. This is a republic and the people should be able to pick who they want.

I know how you feel Jerry -- I spent a number of years living under Marion Barry's regime. I was glad when they term-limited him but I also realized that if the majority of voters in DC want to keep reelecting him, they should be allowed to do so. The same thing goes for the majority of voters in West Virginia and Massachusetts who keep sending Robert Byrd and Ted Kennedy back to the Senate.

As far as Presidential term limits go, why only two? Until FDR, nobody ran for more than two "because George Washington only served for two."

SHOCKER that Clinton wants term limits changed. I had my 8 years of Bill, it was enough for me.

I'm with reeshy - think about changing them on the state and local levels. But leave the Presidency at two terms and done.

I dislike the idea of term limits. Being told we can't have an elected official even when we might want him back is insulting. Take Rudy in NYC. I think we all wanted him to stay instead of the shmuck midget in there now.

Then again, once a person is in there, they do tend to stay like Jerrytaker said. I'd use Uncle Ted Kennedy from Mass. as an example. He's the scum of the Earth, yet he just keeps getting re-elected. Same thing with Strom Thurmond. He could hardly speak, but got the vote everytime.

I don't know. I'd say just leave it as is. And like Reeshy said, the only reason he's pushing this is because he knows he's win the Democratic bid to take on Bush in '04 hands down..

<font color=purple>Term limits should be abolished. The whole idea of saving people from themselves is a retarded one. We're a democracy, if a majority of people want any one person in office, that should be the only criteria.

Term limits amount to nothing more than collectively saying "oh, stop me before I vote for the person I really wanna see serve." Stupid!

Shocker Clinton would say anything to get himself back into the public spotlight. Another 4 years of a president who vowed to do something in office but succeeds in only catching some dome in 8 years what a great guy. Plus here in maryland the people continually elect barbara mcculskey the most do nothing senator ever, she has never initiated one thing in congress in the whole time there she is worthless

and oh yeah Reagan should be the fifth face added to Rushmore

the idea with term limits is to make sure that people dont make careers out of politics. By staying in politics for most of their professional lives, many people either

1) lose touch with the constuants

2) put their job above the people. (i.e. spending time in office working towards reelection rather than actually doing anything meaningful)

3)begin to run out of ideas. By trhis i mean that when people stay in a particular job for years and years, new ideas never get a chance to develop.

With a new person cming in every few years, you idealy get a new perspective on things, and hopefully better ways of dealing with issues.

Now I know this is extremely idealsitic, but I really think that term limits are important.

Let's face facts...if there weren't any term limits, Clinton would be president right NOW. So think about THAT if you support this.

And I don't think we have ENOUGH use of term limits. Like Moe said, too many careerists like Byrd, Kennendy and Thurmond...hell, I say extend it to the Supreme Court. KEEP IT FRESH. Our country is constantly evolving and growing and changing...so should its politicians.

well supreme court needs to b for life, or for a long time at least. otherwise every president would just appoint those justices that supported tehir way of thought. every conservative president will have justices who interpret the consititution word for word, and every liberal president would have justices who interpret the constitution very liberally. i think justices should hold power until their 70.

I don't think the justices should have 4-year limits...even limiting to just 20 years would be fine. It's just absurd to have these things locked in for 30-40+ years.

And how did he do that?

Well, he had to raise taxes to pay off that massive Reagan/Bush Debt.
He negotiated wisely and got treaties like GATT and NAFTA done, as well as other trading policies that increased trade and inspired business confidence.
He worked in a spirit of compromise and cooperation with Republicans [something we don't see much of these days] who, BACK THEN were motivated by a principal known as being "fiscally responsible". Indeed, our current president's budget would be illegal had Republicans gotten everything they wanted back in the mid-90s.
Clinton's efforts to balance the budget also helped to inspire businessmen, as they saw that the government was serious about getting it's financial house in order.
Plus Clinton's personality was great as we could relax and have fun and enjoy good times and not have to put up with all of this polarization caused by the hard-asses in the administration who don't operate in the same spirit of compromise and cooperation.
Now we have an administration that is as fiscally irresponsible as you can get.
Massive record debt seems to be a Republican tradition.
