Hilary Duff's love-hate relationship with Disney has finally ended in a break up.
Disney officially announced the studio has parted ways with Duff, 15, the star of its TV series Lizzie McGuire and the spin-off movie The Lizzie McGuire Movie.
Disney had hoped to produce a second Lizzie McGuire film and create a new TV series, which would follow its heroine into high school.
"It's been really great working with Disney but it's also been really difficult. I owe so much to Lizzie McGuire because the show is what helped establish me in the industry, but Disney has recently been saying some very unkind and unfair things about me," said Duff in a telephone interview yesterday.
Duff is upset because she feels "Disney has made it seem like it's all about money on my part. They made it look as if I was the greedy one when they are the ones doing devious things."
The actress, who was paid $1 million US for The Lizzie McGuire Movie, says she was promised additional income once the film made $50 million at the box office.
In its four weeks of release, the $17-million movie has grossed $37 million.
"Disney is going to pull it from major release now that it's made $40 million for them. They'll make another $60 million on DVD, but I won't see my proper share of any of that."
Though Disney insisted in its announcement there was no chance for reconciliation, Duff is guardedly optimistic.
"Disney has said that several times before. I'm not as certain as they are that we've seen the last of Lizzie.
"I loved doing the character and I loved doing the movie, but it won't be that traumatic if this really is the end.
"I have many offers coming in."
Duff has a few days left on the Steve Martin comedy Cheaper by the Dozen and plans to begin filming A Cinderella Story this summer.
"We're in the process of casting A Cinderella Story right now. It's great because it will film just a five-minute drive from where I live (in Los Angeles). It will be released next summer."
Duff is also looking forward to the September release of her first album, Metamorphosis.
She sings two songs on The Lizzie McGuire film soundtrack, now in stores, but promises the music on her debut album "is much different.
"Most of the songs are somewhere between hard rock and pop, with a few songs in both those styles."
In a release to the Los Angeles Times this weekend, Disney production chief Nina Jacobson said: "We very much wanted to continue the Lizzie franchise, but every deal has its tipping point, the point at which it no longer makes sense. That's the point we reached in the Lizzie negotiations."
I'll be sure to give her a very good home :)
