The Ataris' cover of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" is vagely "Fastball-esque" in a way. That is, if it makes it as a Summer song this season.A catchy tune now updated. What do you think?

Any Ataris fans out there?

First of all, these guys had a gigantic fat guy in their band for the longest time. I have no idea if they still do, but I think he was the bass player, and having a wacky, gigantic fat bass player in a pop punk band is like begging for a safe to fall on your head right after the space shuttle ran you over. Twice. That and they jumped from being pop punk to emo to looking like The Strokes in increasingly futile attempts to seem not awful. And haven't these guys been around for a few years? I know they're all at least of legal drinking age...yet every song sounds like they're still sophomores in high school. ADULTS PRETENDING TO STILL BE KIDS IS NAUGHTY. And there should be a law against it.

But ultimately, they've sealed their own fate with this cover. It was a bit scary to see that first "We're not just ripping off The Get-Up Kids, we're sonically raping them down their THROATS" song get some airplay, but thankfully they're slicing their own bellies open in a suprisingly ghey show of ritualistic career suicide. Becoming big thanks to a cheesy pop punk cover of a cheesy 80's song? Three words to remember...ALIEN. ANT. FARM. Where are they now? BREAKING THEIR BACKS BECAUSE THEIR HUGELY FAT JOCK BASSIST KEEPS FLIPPING THE BUS OVER. Ataris, save your backs now and toss the fat bassist off a cliff and run back to California. It's not too late to snag that job at Hot Topics.

I find it ironic that most of the people that actually like the Ataris and like this song, would have no idea without Krock's Dj's saying so that it was a cover or even who Don Henley is.

I personally like it. I've never heard of the Ataris before, But thier cover is so much better than the Code 7 one from a few years back...

I really couldn't care less about fat bass players or whatever plays on K-rock, it's a good cover of a good song. Period.

As much as I love this cover and The Ataris to boot, releasing of cover songs AS SINGLES is never good. Thank goodness I don't listen to the radio or watch much of MTV. The worst thing is that people will not even give Don Henley the respect he deserves and will think that this IS The Ataris own song.

I like The Get Up Kids. They're actually starting to sound like Get Up Men now, which is nice.

I liked especially how On A Wire had all this hype and it was gonna be their biggest album yet and they totally put out something unexpected. At first i was like "What the HELL?!?" but then i read an interview where they said they did not want to get bored with their music so they wrote in a different style and i gotta admit, it is a good record. I like that in a band where they want to change up so they don't become bored with music.

I thought they were just empty CD cases used to fill in the space between good bands!

Well Fluffernutter, I owe you a Coke!

You mean there are CD's in there. I thought they WERE empty!

Trust me, I have a LOT of spaces a a lot of GOOD bands. In my opinion of course. I am all over the map with my crap thank you very much.

For some reason though, the biggest space of emptiness is between (not my brain, thank you though) LEatherface and LIars. Hmm, who is that tripe that I keep around.

Ugh, Ugh, Ugh... They didn't do the choruses right. They sing the lyrics for the first chorus each time, that always bugged me...

And the Atari's cover uses the "beach effects" like the original, which is a nice touch.

I actually missed the "Black Flag sticker" (I only heard it once) Which is cool, because it's updated and doesn't refrence the Dead...ugh...

If you're going to do a SECOND cover, at least make sure you can improve on it. This is the "edgy rock 'n' roll version" and it's more pussy than the previous cover.

i will say that the fact that they let Columbia records commercialize their image and music has pissed me off. I understand that things like that need to be done to sell records, but they really changed a LOT with the new album.

and that means i will not be attending any more ataris shows, becuase they'll be crawling with 14 year olds screaming for in this diary or boys of summer... the last get up kids show i went to was bad enough, and they haven't even gotten major airplay like the ataris.

It was like this at the AFI show I went to last month. Apparently they are getting pushed now and Girls Not Grey is getting airplay. Yes, I love the song. I wanted to hear it live. NOT to the echo of a shitload of screaming girls at the first couple chords. That makes me cringe. The price of being on a major.

i got into a screaming match with some stupid teenagers at the get up kids show.

SUPERCHUNK opened for the get up kids... half the kids in the crowd didn't even know who they were, and these kids next to me were like "who the fuck do these guys think they are". I started yelling at them and saying things such as "back in my day..." and i think i called him a whippersnapper. god im old. the get up kids actually came out on stage and were like "superchunk rocks, we wouldnt be here without them". but i did see some dumb girl running back and forth and back and forth in front of me trying to giggle and impress some guy, and i stuck my foot out and tripped her. that made my night.

I was looking over my gigantic collection of impeccable music, and the only tolerable "pop punk" I found were the following:

The Ramones
The Buzzcocks
The Undertones
Alkaline Trio
Green Day (Through "Dookie". I still enjoy them here and there, but they mutated into something else)
Ash
X
Social Distortion
The Suicide Machines
Jawbreaker, and thusly, by default, Jets To Brazil

Everything else close was either too "hard" or crossed into the much more gooder "power pop" territory.

Right now I have Longwave on, then the latest Feeder album on, and then El Da Sensei. I'm so unspeakably bohemian and awesome. Stand close, and you may breathe in my secondhand-cool.

Alkaline Trio

I was surprised here. I love the new one and Radio has to be one of the best songs ever written

Shaking like a dog shittin' razorblades,
waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me.......

Taking your own life with boredom,
I'm taking my own life with wine -
it helps you to rule out the sorrow,
it helps me to empty my mind......

I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you,
plugged in and ready to fall

Fuck You Aurora is pretty classic as well.

Trust me, I've been aware of The Ataris for a few years now. It just saddens me that they're suddenly popping up in the public spotlight along with two other bands that I had hoped would wallow forever in undiscovered mediocrity, The Donnas and New Found Glory.

It's the great curse of popularity and money, you're no longer any good afterward. The Ataris have changed their sound so that they can be more accepted and now suck ass. NewFoundGlory has also done so, making their somewhat tolerable music crappier. (even though i do like "From the Screen to Your Stereo", it's good covers)

Speaking of covers, i don't think that covering Don Henley is a problem for the Ataris. NOFX's version of "Vincent" is very good in my opinion, and that song was originally written by Don Maclean. I have heard maybe 3 Don Maclean songs, but can still appreciate a good cover when i hear it. Not that I am comparing the Ataris to the gods who are NOFX, at all. That'd be stupid.

Yeah, but these guys weren't good BEFORE, and I was comforted by the fact it seemed they'd all be doomed to always flying under the radar. AFI's another bunch like that. BAH.

Shaking like a dog shittin' razorblades,
waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me.......

Taking your own life with boredom,
I'm taking my own life with wine -
it helps you to rule out the sorrow,
it helps me to empty my mind......

I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you,
plugged in and ready to fall

i love that song, i think its their best one

Is social d really considered poppy?

Did you ever really listen to the ataris old stuff though? I really hated them until I listened to a lot of their stuff, and now they're one of my favorite bands.

Although, I do have to agree that their new album is sucky.

I'd say so...or at least their two biggest albums. But in their case, that's a GOOD thing. Nothing wrong with being catchy.

I've probably only heard 6 or 7 of their pre-today stuff, and it just didn't do it for me. Too bland, too earnest, too stuck in a youth timewarp...not for me, chief.
