Thought this may be interesting to see what we have in our respective collections and strange mismatches. I've gotten into a lot more J-Pop lately.

I grew distressed when I learned that Utada Hikaru has recently married. You were meant for ME, babe.

I am surprised no one called out fluffernutter for being for anal that his albums/tapes/cd's are in alphabetical order.

I own over 2,000 cds, 100 tapes, and 300 albums. They are in "Chairman Order" and I can find any one at a moments notice.

I guess if there is a pattern, they're kinda lumped by genre.

What I have to do with my cd's though is find a display case large enough that I can place them vertically. They are now stacked up in rows of like 50 and it makes them each have to access....

I've got about 1,600 CD's, and at the moment they are broken into "Hip-hop/Electronica", "Rock/Alternative/Classics" and "Soundtracks". Alphabetical by artist, comp title, etc.. The categories are a little broad, and there's a lot of crossover. Stuff like, say James Brown, George Clinton, Prince and Bob Marley goes into "Hip-hop", because I feel they've influenced that style of music...plus it's easier to keep all the "urban styles together"...soul, hip-hop, funk, reggae...

Happy Mondays goes into "electronica". But Primal Scream is in "rock". Protishead is in "electronica". But Beth Gibbons solo album is in "alternative". I just go with my gut and what "feels" right.

I had the hardest time with this as my collection kept growing. Back in the day after one of the jamesways i worked at remodeled, I aquired a bunch of the CD racks they used in the department and they hung nicely on the walls of my room until I outgrew those.

Of all places, Wal-Mart sells these GREAT wooden CD/Video/DVD racks that sit about 3 feet high and about a foot wide. I have 10 of those 5 wide and two high to make a wall of everything. I will provide pictures soon. The tall 6 foot high bookcases work well also as i have two of those stacked almost full of all my vinyl.

I am surprised no one called out fluffernutter for being for anal that his albums/tapes/cd's are in alphabetical order.

Anal YES but I had tried a few years ago to "categorize" everything by genre and I gave up cause I couldn't figure out which should go where. I have my Top 5 and then A - Z for CD's and then A - Z for each size of vinyl (5" - 12"). Everything is also categorized in Excel for easy reference and i have a monthly printout of my vinyl so I am sure not to get multiple copies of a specific pressing. So yeah, very anal but what the hell else do I have going on?

EDIT: This just dawned on me that maybe I was being picked on for being too anal. Sorry, thats just how I do things.

I have about 1000 CD's. All alphabetized by name or band. And then the albums by the artist are in chronological order. I think that this is the only way to catagorize CD's. My wife thinks I'm too anal.

Well as I placed over 3000 songs on my new 30GB iPOD I found it interesting how it sorted them by genre....almost worthy of a seperate post....

A Wal Mart just opened up near me. I gotta check those cases out.

So here's my question: isn't it difficult, if you sort by alphabetical order, to keep moving the cd's around as you place them in order? Like I used to have them in about 50 Ikea metal racks. But if I sorted them alphabetically, I would have to move them all each time I bought a new cd.....

My wife and I have about 1200 CDs together. The main rack is one of those Boltz racks that holds 800. We try to keep that one in alphabetical order. We have assorted other racks and boxes for certain sub-genres (Compilation CDs, CD singles, classical, musicals, etc.) Keeping the main rack in alphabetical order makes the most sense, because my wife and I both know where things are supposed to go. If I tried to convert my wife to my filing system, I'd end up like Daniel Stern yelling at Ellen Barkin in "Diner" for putting his 45s back in the wrong places.

So here's my question: isn't it difficult, if you sort by alphabetical order, to keep moving the cd's around as you place them in order?

Well, yeah it is a pain in the ass but as the old saying goes, I cross that bridge when I come to it. Each section is give some "breathing room" if you will and there are some sections that get a bit more space than others. According to a lot of what I have already A, D, H, M, N, P, S, and The have a bit extra space since those letters begin alot of my stuff. And yes, I put all bands with "The" in the titles under "The" it just works beter for me that way.

So here's my question: isn't it difficult, if you sort by alphabetical order, to keep moving the cd's around as you place them in order?

Not if you have the racks I linked to above. I just leave a little room at the end of each shelf and slide 'em down to make room for any new CD I get...those units don't have any individual slots for the CD's, so it's easy to move tham all at once.
