I was at Best Buy yesterday and was wondering to myself:
1. What's the difference between a regular DVD and a Superbit DVD?
2. Why are there different DVD's like Special Edition and Director's Cut of the same movie? Weren't dvds supposed to carry all the EXTRAS in them?
3. What's the deal with DVD's having different covers such as Heathers (4 diff. covers) and Final Fantasy (2 diff. covers)? Thanks.

1. What's the difference between a regular DVD and a Superbit DVD?
The Superbit discs have little or no extras on the same disc as the actual feature. If there are extras, they are carried on a separate disc. They are kep off so that the space on the disc can be maximized so that they can put the (allegedly ) best possible video transfer and sound mix on the disc
2. Why are there different DVD's like Special Edition and Director's Cut of the same movie? Weren't dvds supposed to carry all the EXTRAS in them?
There is no standardization among the different terms for discs (ultimate edition, special edition, limited edition, etc.). In some cases, you might have 5 or six versions of the same disc. (different variations on rated, unrated, widescreen, full screen, theatrical cut, director's cut, special edition, superbit, etc.)
No one has ever said that all the special feautures should be on any on version.
A director's cut, specifically, usually means a cut of the movie that was not originally released in the theater, but has been re-edited by the director.
3. What's the deal with DVD's having different covers such as Heathers (4 diff. covers) and Final Fantasy (2 diff. covers)?
Purely collectibility. For instance, there are 5 versions of the Reservoir Dogs DVD, with different actors on each one. The one with the Mr. Brown (Tarantino) on the cover is supposed to be the most rare, so collectors were going out of their way to get that one. Someone might be a fan of Reservoir Dogs, and they might make a mental note to pick up the DVD some day, and may eventually do it. If they believe something is rare and collectible, they may be compelled to purchase right away. You also get die-hard collectors who need to have copies of each cover.

1) Superbit uses more of the disc for higher quality sound and video. That's why most of them have no extras, because all the room is used for the movie.
2) Every so often, they let a dvd fall out of print for a while then issue a new version with new extras to make money.
3) There's 2 reasons. (1) They release multiple covers as a limited edition gimmick when the dvd is released to sell more. i.e., Heathers and Resevoir Dogs. (2) A new edition of the dvd comes out. In the case of Final Fantasy (and Fight Club), they let the 2 dvd special editions go out of print and replace it with a less expensive 1 dvd version.

And Spiderman and MIB2 had slightly different covers for their full screen and widescreen versions.
There have been at least 4 different versions of Terminator 2 on DVD and I just got the Extreme Edition.
