i'm listening again to the 6.04 show again, specifically the mikey d stage mother part.
both of my parents come from large irish families (7/8 siblings on each side). the old theory: to have a gang of chilldren, in the hope 1 would become successful and support the parents in old age. i've heard the same thing applied to large black/ spanish families these days.
today, families are much smaller, 1-2 kids. and i don't know if parents lived vicariously through their kids previously. but it seems to be a trend, ie. american juniors.
now is this theory of the favorite child in a big family being applied to the single child of a smaller family? atleast in the bigger family, the favorite can shift; there are options. but in the smaller family, like mikey said, "i like to see her do her best." and like becomes the expectation to do nothing less than the best.
