I wanted to originally ask the girls this questions ... but nowadays guys are doing the primping as much as the girls.

Have any of you tried this yet? You walk into this booth, and raise your arms up, and they spray you with a self-tanner mist for a couple of seconds. I wanted to know how the results were?

I am pale, and I like my pale skin. But being a little tan would be nice. I don't want to use bronzers/self-tanners. I've never tried them, and can spot someone who has used them.

I don't want to lay out in the sun or in those tanning beds ... I don't want cancer or wrinkles. I am not being vain ... I've just seen young women who have tanned so much, they look horrible.

The only thing wrong with this is the same as the do it yourself sell tanner. It has to go on perfectly or else you will streak. I worked at a tanning salon for five years and have seen no horror stories about this stuff. I would stick with the normal tanning beds. They are no more harmful than the regular sun. Due to regulations tanning salons can not say they are better than regular sun tanning. But the rays that come out of UV bulbs are controled as where the suns aren't.

Yeah, but Fat Tony, "no more harmful than the suns" doesn't mean much when the sun's rays are so dangerous!! I haven't heard of a single doctor who has advocated (or even been equivocal about) the use of tanning beds - UVA is bad for your skin!!!

But the rays that come out of UV bulbs are controled as where the suns aren't.

That makes it "safer", how?

That's not to say that everyone who tans in a bed is going to get some sort of melanoma or something - it's just going to increase the chances that you will, particularly if you're fair skinned (like Christy). Personally I'm not particularly fair skinned but I do have a tendency to burn so I always put on at least SPF 15 on my face before I go out (it's in my moisturizer), and I use at least SPF 30 when I'm going to really be in the sun, fishing, climbing, stuff like that. I just had an atypical mole removed from my back that I developed after a particularly bad sunburn 5 years ago. I don't need to get any more bad moles. I do agree that I enjoy the look of being tan, though :)

I've never tried them, and can spot someone who has used them.

Hey Christy, you can only spot the ones you spot - for all you know people who do the misty thing, or people who use good brands of self-tanners look so good that you DON'T spot them! Buy a few brands and test them out somewhere inconspicuous and see how they look on you - different brands look different on different people so what looks fake on someone else may look great on you, you never know!

On the subject of tanning in general, when I was young, I found tans really attractive. However, now that I know the damage that the sun does to skin, as well as how it prematurely ages so many women, I no longer find it attractive at all. Give me natural, healthy skin over a suntan or tanning bed tan any day.

My sister is a freak with the tanning products. I think she's tried almost everything. Self tanners began to peel/flake pretty quickly and she ended up looking like a marble notebook. Now she goes to a tanning salon a few times a week and she looks GROSS. She's all brown and the tanning bed has begun to take moisture out of her skin so it looks and feels dry. I'm almost albino myself, Christy, so I know what you mean about getting a little color, but I think I'd rather stay this way than fuck around with tanning alternatives. I've never seen a fake tan that looked good.

i think this stuff is all really creepy. the vast majority of people look much better the way that they are naturally than any artificial way. if you're naturally darker, it looks good on you. but people who are naturally pale generally look weird when they're tanned, even tanned by the sun.

i am very pale, and happily so. this is my coloring and i have no desire to change that. plus, it's a lot easier to find my veins this way.

As is true with most everything in life, in moderation it can not hurt you. It is when you go overboard that you have to worry about the wrinking, the leathery looking skin and such.

But you are actually wrong TooCute. It isn't the UVA that is harmful to your skin. It is the UVB. UVB is what the rays of sun produce. UVA is the good rays that cause the golden brown skin where as the UVB causes the redness.

Even in moderation, it CAN hurt you if you are predisposed to skin cancer. There's a good chance that it won't, but there's always a possibility that it might. Personally I prefer not to risk increasing my chances at developing cancer, however slight that risk is. Unfortunately the only you're going to know is once you actually develop cancer. Certainly there are certain indicators, like fair skin, hair/eye color, and how your skin generally reacts to the sun.

But you are actually wrong TooCute. It isn't the UVA that is harmful to your skin. It is the UVB. UVB is what the rays of sun produce. UVA is the good rays that cause the golden brown skin where as the UVB causes the redness.

Sorry, but actually you're completely wrong. The sun produces UVA, UVB, and UVC. Most of the UVC is abosrbed by the ozone layer. Of course that's got holes in it, so who knows?!

You are corrrect in saying that UVB is generally thought to be more harmful; since tanning beds on average emit only about 15% UVB (the rest UVA), I mentioned the UVA. UVA penetrates more deeply into the skin than UVB does, and actually it can cause more of the premature wrinkling and aging than UVB does, since it is penetrating deeper and it is affecting all the connective tissue and junk that hold your skin taut and smooth.

Are you going to notice this any time soon? No. 20 years down the line you might, however.

The other key point to remember is that UVA is still bad for you. It still causes damage. It can still cause melanoma - the worst type of skin cancer. And in fact, if you are on certain medications that make you sensitive to the light (I seem to recall perhaps from a commercial that accutane was one of these? I don't remember), UVA can be in fact worse for you than UVB - it makes your skin more sensitive to those particular wavelengths.

There are a gazillion studies supporting the "badness" of UVA if you want to read up on it. There are also apparently studies that show that the amount of UVB emitted by tanning beds is still harmful.

I just looked up what the American Association of Dermatologists have to say about tanning salons, and it includes the following:

The AAD supports the following requirements for indoor tanning facilities, including:

A warning statement defining potential hazards and consequences of exposure to UVA should be signed by each patron.

No minor should be permitted to use a tanning bed without written consent of a parent or guardian.

No person or facility should advertise the use of any UVA or UVB tanning device using wording such as "safe," "safe tanning,", "no harmful rays," "no adverse effect," or similar wording or concepts.

Are you definitely going to get skin cancer if you go to a tanning salon? No. Are you going to immediately see any bad effects from a tanning salon tan if you do it as they direct? Probably not.

Are you increasing the possibility that you might develop skin cancer at some point in your life? Definitely. End of story.

Besides, this was a thread on UV free tanning booths. How did UV tanning booths even become and issue?

I use self tanners all the time. Banana boat, neutrogena, ban de soleil, most of them are great. The best part is that if you fuck up, you can reapply and fix it the next day or wait three days and it's gone. Don't use it on your face, use bronzer for that to even out the tone.

I do tanning booths every so often as well. I don't have the commitment to it though, it's just too much work.

TooCute is correct Tony. Tanning in boothes is far from safe. It maybe less harmful then sitting directly in the sun, but it's still bad for you. You can get skin cancer either way....

I find it nothing but gross when it's January and snowing and you see some chick bright orange and tanned from a booth. I also always wonder why people go during the Summer time? Just go outside and wait for the sun. How hard is that?

Ditto. I've tried a few of them and they turn out OK, but I don't continually reapply and build up the tan when I should. I usually just put some on if I'm going to where a skirt or something because that's the only thing that really bothers me is how pale my legs are. I guess I shouldn't be so self concious about it but I'd rather not look orange and leathery (or possibly get skin cancer.)
