View Full Version : Why do you see people on tv bite a coin?

I guess it's more of an old time thing. You see it in the black and white era or old Bugs Bunny cartoons.
The person will get a quarter let's say, and bite it like they think it's not real.
Is this why? Were they testing it to see if it was a cheap conterfeit? Maybe this is an old inside joke that only dead guys would get?
Wow. Is this a scraping the bottom of the barrel post or what?!

Coins used to be gold, which is soft and could be bitten in to. So biting them was a check to see if the coin was real. I don't know if that's right, but that's what someone told me.

Biting a gold coin would leave teeth marks. Gold is a soft metal.
However, I don't know that the US ever used gold coins as currency.

The US used gold currency until 1933 when Roosevelt made it illegal to use gold coins etc. (that's after the banks got closed for four days)... eventually the gov't taking all the gold made made our currency the reserve currency that it is today.
Actually, because of that law, I think that it's technically still illegal to posess gold coins that were minted after 1933? But I know that they still make them as collectors things so that doens't seem to make much sense. Oh well. I've never paid much attention to numismatics.

Whew... I got nervous for a second there. At first glance that looks like it could say something else.

I did some research on this, and was very surprised that the US did indeed use gold and silver coins.
I thought, incorrectly, that gold currency was in the form of actual nuggets or a treasury certificate backed up by the gold reserve in the US treasury (fort knox).
Gold coins were melted en mass and molded into gold bars on two occassions, as the value of the gold exceeded the value of the coin.
Some sites say it's illegal to own US gold coins, but I'm somewhat skeptical about this, since the US treasury has a gold coin collectors set.

I don't think so. I think he just bit his coin when he got one for shining shoes. I did a little further research, though.

How does Underdog get his powers?
Underdog has a ring that contains a "vitamin" (not "steriod") pill. When he eats one, he becomes super powerful. When he uses up his powers, he becomes weak and has to take another one to get his strength back. Unfortunately, Underdog's IQ seems to be the same number as the number of letters in his name, so he forgets to take the pill and has to have Polly feed it to him.

In the old days the coins were not only gold and silver but they also had other metals, like iron and stuff. That was because they couldn't get enough gold and silver for all those coins. People with bad eyesight used to bite the coins to taste and feel (some metals are softer) what the metal was. Sometimes it was just tin and other cheap stuff, you couldn't use that so nobody wanted those coins. You wouldn't want a ten dollar bill when you are supposed to get a 20 do you?
To learn the truth you must learn this: do I want to know the truth and can I handle the truth?
