The Marlboro man was big on tv when I was growing up. The ban on cigarette tv advertising began in 1971. This website http://www.uchsc.edu/sm/cihl/history_of_cigarette_smoke.htm isiinteresting, but it wont answer the "why not beer?" question.

I checked out the link but it doesn't clarify as to why the ban went into effect. But that was a sad sorry about the Malboro Man though.

Can you show someone drinking a beer on a TV beer ad , now ?
This was verboten when I was growing up.

I'm pretty sure you still can't. Watch the commercials today closely. They cut away from the shot where bottle/can/glass actually touches the mouth.

That's what I remember. Alot of times they'll cut to the mug or bottle being returned to the table.
On Johnny Carson, one time after a live Bud spot he made a point of saying " the spot is over " and then popping the top and having a belt.

Can't show actual drinking of the beer, can't have TV commercials of any "hard liquors", though they CAN show girly drinks (Zima, et al). And it may have changed, but for the longest time on TV shows they could show people lighting up cigarettes, but you couldn't actually show them exhaling or inhaling.

The main reason? Hypocracy.

Some statistics on death from tobaco, alcohol and the illegal drugs (http://xtramsn.co.nz/health/0,,8073-2180280,00.html)

The following information is from this site.

Tobacco remained the number one killer in 2000, claiming the lives of 4.9 million people or 70% of all drug- related deaths - one million more people than in 1990.

Alcohol was the second biggest killer, claiming 1.8 million lives (about 26% of all substance abuse-related deaths). The greatest proportion of alcohol- related deaths was found in the Americas and Europe.

Illicit drugs came in third, causing 223000 deaths (about three percent of all substance abuse-related deaths).

It really makes no sense that 97% of substance related deaths are caused by legal drugs, but the govt wastes billions of dollars a year on the "war against [illegal] drugs"

Horde, I think looking at the straight numbers makes the results a little skewed.

It would be better if they showed the deaths to the total number of smokers, drinkers, or illegal drug users. The percentages would probably show the death ratio is fairly close.

The percentages are very straightforward.

It's been known for ages that booze and tobacco kills far more (97%) than all other drugs combined (3%). How much more clear can that be?

Isn't it obvious? Cigarettes can kill you. Alcohol can't. Tabacco is whacko if you're a teen but go right ahead and drink up, junior!

Alcohol doesn't kill? Hello! Alcohol related deaths, psyrosis of the liver, drunk driving. On the off subject, do alcohol lobbyist have more pull in Washington than the Nicotine lobbyist? Due to the lawsuits and all.
