Here's one:
The Presidents of the United States of America
I saw them play the Fairfax Fair (yes they are doing fairs now) and they sounded great live. Too bad they couldnt do any better than Lump of Peaches, cause they are some pretty chill guys and good at getting the crowd goin.

Off the top off my head --
From my days as a DJ on a college radio station, these are bands that I recall being on our playlist in the late 80s that you don't hear much of anymore:

Transvision Vamp
That Petrol Emotion
The Wonder Stuff
Hoodoo Gurus
Dead Milkmen
Screaming Blue Messiahs
Fetchin Bones
House of Freaks
Shriekback
World Party
Hunters and Collectors
Hothouse Flowers
The Primitives

Marcy Playground - one hit wonderthey were not a one hit wonder. obviously sex and candy was their biggest hit, but sherry fraiser, st joe on a school bus, and it's saturday got a fair amount of radio play. i saw them play the wetlands a few years back, and it was actually a pretty damn good show. i was surprisingly impressed.
Better than Ezra is another that comes to mind.really good band. they never hit it too big, other than a song or two off each album - good, desparately wanting, one more murder, and at the stars. i wonder what happened to them anyway...
The Catherine Wheel.this is why i love mojo. but i don't know that time ever really remembered the catherine wheel to begin with...

Bands that time forgot???? With the exception of "Porno 4 Pyro's" I have never heard of any of the bands in this thread. What genre of music are they??? Before I read this thread I was almost positive I had an excellent knowledge of most music with the exception of odd 80's bands that tried ridiculously too hard to look like freaks. Are we sure that these are bands time forgot or is this the "Remember my talented yet unpopular (in a chic way) band I used to like back in the day"? I'm not being sarcastic just flustered.

Most of the bands here did have at least one charted hit, or a video in rotation on MTV (Usually late night or on "120 Minutes"), except for most of Mikeyboy's bands. Come on, you say you have an "excellent knowledge of most music", yet have NEVER heard of Semisonic, Marcy's Playground, Catherine Wheel or Big Star? Liar. Even just being a long time R&F fan should have you knowing of Semisonic.
I mean, do you just want ANOTHER one-hit wonder thread here, or people's ideas of bands that had a shot, a tiny hit, or a glimmer of recognition, before being unjustly ignored? A lot of these bands had a lot of write up with indie and underground music press. Do we HAVE to stick with mainstream stuff for the umpteenth time? UNLEASH THE UNKNOWN BANDS.
Just a rant, not a lecture...

For the record I haven't liked main stream music since I bought the "Bad" & "Faith" albums as a kid.
Most of the bands here did have at least one charted hit, or a video in rotation on MTV (Usually late night or on "120 Minutes")
Now it ALL makes sense! The program "120 Minutes" on MTV played music I absolutely found atrocious. Honestly, that kind of music and "MODERN DAY" R & B are actually the only forms of music I do not like whatsoever. Every other genre of music I'm pretty tip-top with.

"That kind"? "120 Minutes" played everything from punk to funk to hip-hop to trip-hop. It was just about the ONLY show on MTV that DIDN'T play any one kind of music.

I never really liked MTV but if I was at a friend's house who had 120 Minutes on I would usually ask them to change it, the music was very boring to me. Below is what seems to be an informative link that describes what the show was all about.

When I refer to "120 Minutes" I am speaking of the years 84 till the very early 90's. I completely stopped watching MTV all together around that time. I believe almost all of the groups listed on this thread were part of that "alternative" music which was apparently played on that show. I don't mean to dwell but I couldn't understand how I could miss so many bands. This now explains why I had no idea who these groups were.

WSOU plays HUM. I wasn't aware that they had left to begin with.
-Breeders
They're still together, they don't play mainstream clubs anymore just small gigs under an assortment of different names.
-Silverchair
Ahhhhhh, the first band i was ever obsessed with. The Memories. ::sigh::
Again, they aren't gone, they just released an album in August "The Greatest View". Pretty good album but in my opinion nothing can touch "Neon Ballroom".
-Live
Last song i heard from them i believe was featured in the Leonardo DiCprio movie, "The Beach"...I think the title was "when Dolphins Cry". If they released something after this i am completely unaware otherwise i wouldn't have posted this part. hehe

When I refer to "120 Minutes"......these groups were.
During this time period you mentioned Steels, 84 - early 90's, I was being bred my metal. I knew all this shit existed but my mind was too closed at the time. i look back in shame at my ignorance towards so much goo dmusic. Fortunately around 92 or 93 my mind began to open and I fell in love with all these bands.
I grew out of being a "metalhead" into just being a "musichead".
WSOU plays HUM. I wasn't aware that they had left to begin with.
They are probably the only station as I have heard them on there too. WSOU has the best selection of music. It is like they raided my collection and picked what to play. I hardly ever have a hard time with them. I am glad they came around from the nu metal shitpile they were turning into a few years back. I remember back in the day always looking forward to getting to right around new brunswick and just switching right to 89.5. That was hardcore and metal central back then and they have kind of reestablished themselves as such in recent years.

Happy Mondays...
Yeah, i never quite understood their appeal, especially since
their music didn't really fit the culture of the time and place
(Madchester late 80s/early 90s). And yet they were beloved
by many. And Tony Wilson comparing Shaun Ryder to Yeats?
Come on. However, the club mix of "Hallelujah" does hit me
in the heart and make my body move.
But time didn't forget the Happy Mondays. They forgot
themselves.

Hey, you do THAT muck E/coke/smack/crack, it's a shocker they're still ALIVE, much less remembering anything.
Though Black Grape was pretty fun.
Ah well.

I'm a big wheel down at the cracker factory.
And here's another band time forgot: The Hooters.
They played the Spring Fling my sophomore year in college. The Fixx was the year before.

Oh, WOW.
I'm honestly angry with myself that I left out one of my favorite bands of the 90's, and probably one of rock's most tragic figures, too.
Material Issue.
I'm a complete power pop geek, and these guys were pretty much the top of the heap for me in the mid-90's. Sadly, lead singer Jim Ellison killed himself with crabon monoxide fumes from his moped(!) in his garage after a breakup with a girlfriend. If there isn't a more creepily, horribly "appropriate" reason and way out for a power pop guru, I wouldn't be suprised. But the news of his death probably ranked just under Jeff Buckley's in terms of personal impact and regret.
Long live Material Issue.

And along those lines, time seems to have forgotten all my other power pop favorites of the 80's and 90's, some of which have been mentioned, some who have not...

I think Matthew Sweet has already been brought up...
But I KNOW one of my favorites haven't...The Go-Betweens. They were an Australian band in the 80's that essentially sounded like The Smiths merging with Big Star. Classic, classic stuff.

Juliana Hatfield
Just saw her the other night, playing onstage with Evan Dando. And J. Mascis was playing lead in the opening band. It was just forgotten music icons left and right...and AWESOME.
And Travis went away when Coldplay became the new Travis and everyone forgot about the old Travis. Which is too bad, because Travis always ruled. They have a new album coming out this year, actually. Why can't the world have room for both Coldplay and Travis?

And speaking of bands with first names as names, America sure forgot about James pretty fast after "Laid" came out. And now it's too late. Bastards.
