Hi HordeKing.

I'm a curious newbie, and I've been wondering - how do you know so much? What do you do besides answer people's questions all day?

In short, what's your story?

ps: and how did you come by that handle?

KATE - Hi and welcome to the board. Remember our motto, "Post early, and post often."

By way of personal background, I'm 37, very happily married (for 16 years), and have 3 kids and a Golden Retriever.

My undergraduate degrees are Cum Laude in Political Science and Psychology. I have a tremendous interest in virtually EVERYTHING. I try to keep abreast of various fields of particular interest by reading about 30 magazines and/or periodicals a month. I also attend courses that seem interesting, fun or provocative. For example, I recently took some classes in genetics and archeology for pleasure and to learn more about the fields. Currently my reading room (OK, my wife calls it a "bathroom," is full of books on philosophy, computers, science and the usual magazines.

But I digress. My (current) graduate degree is a JD. I'm a member of the NY and NJ Bar Associations. While attending law school I was able to continue doing volunteer work in hospitals, and elsewhere. I also managed to squeeze in a yearlong stint at Legal Services for the Elderly where I was able to help my clients resolve some emotional and psychological issues, which were at least equally important to them as their legal difficulties.

I worked as a trial lawyer for the disabled for many years. I found that I enjoyed the counseling aspects of law much more than any other part. The ethics of the profession were particularly disturbing and conflicted with my ideals of basic concepts of truth, justice and fairness.

Although I derived satisfaction from my personal and professional accomplishments as an attorney, following extensive introspection, I realized that I could do the most good as part of the mental health care profession, where I could assist those in need in a direct, intimate, caring and supportive atmosphere.

Once I thought it through it was a surprisingly easy decision to quit law and go back to school. I'm currently in grad school studying to be a psychotherapist. I work with large numbers of people in this regard. I find my volunteer work with teens and young adults to be most rewarding.

I make certain to read as much as possible in as many different areas as possible. Primarily because I enjoy it but also because you'd be amazed at what sort of things come up in a therapy session. It makes me more effective to be able to discuss whatever comes up in an intelligible fashion.

Finally, I wish I knew as much as people seem to credit me with. Whatever I learned I learned through dilligent hard work. The only thing that comes naturally to me is empathy and caring.

Horde King -

Wow, I am impressed. Thanks for the explanation!

So, how did you come to be the rf.net oracle? Does this count as volunteer work with troubled teens and young adults? ;]

KATE - There is a fine but distinctive line that must be drawn between being "troubled," and "normal teen angst."

Practically no one here - (cough cough, Lou, cough cough) is delusional or otherwise psychotic.

In any event, no volunteer work is counted towards the clinical hours needed for the degree.
