Hey HK,

So ive worked 1 year at KB toys, and my store closed in may. All other KB's were full on staff, so i was un able to transfer to a new store, or to my former store. ( I originally transferred from the mall to a low volume store.) I recieved my severance pay, and my time with the poorly run KB Toys was done.

Now its time to find a new job, but problem is, I cant.

Everywhere I apply, im being turned down. I know for a fact its not my recommendations, infact, the people i have on the list that i worked with were sad to see that i wouldnt be with KB toys anymore. So i ruled that out, and it cant be that im inexpierenced. I worked the damn christmas season in a toy store, imagine a more painful time!

But then when following up with Tower Records i kinda got a hint. They thought despite my expierence in retail, great references and all that stuff, a college student needed the job more, or that they thought i was too young (17 is older enough i think, assholes.)

and im not even applying to high end stores, i mean its fucking Tower Records, FYE, The local sports jersey store and a radio-shack. Im more than qualified to work at any of those stores, and I know i have more expierence than the douchbags that get the job over me who just got out of community college for the year.

So what is a teen like myself todo? Just keep on trying? or live off my very hesitant to give me money, Ma and Pop.

Ive thought about taking a summer class at Conneticuit School of Broadcasting, but i need money dammit!.

REED, the economy sucks and it's very difficult to find a job.

Many people find it helpful to canvas their friends and relatives about openings in their companies. Since you have references, they may be a good place to start asking about any jobs that they're aware of.

Worse comes to worse, there's an incontinence study being conducted at Albert Einstein Medical School. The pay isn't great, but you get all the free adult diapers you need. ;)

I'm with HK on this one. . . are you still in HS? Can your school put you in touch with any summer internship programs?

At my company, we have a few high school interns this summer. . . too bad we're in NJ or I'd try to get you in . . . and they work just as hard as the rest of us. PLUS, you get great experience to put on your resume for the future. . .

Ask your friends, your parents or people you know if there are any types of programs like this around in your area.

Either that, or try the grocery store. It's a shit-job for shit-pay, but at least it's money. I did that my first summer home from college and I LOATHED every minute of every day of every week for the 3 months I was home. But I had money for books in the Fall.

You'll find something, I'm sure. Good luck and don't get discouraged!

Our school doesnt do internships, plus i need to get paid.

I was making 8.50 an hour at KB, and any new job ill be at minimium wage. So its gonna suck real bad, but gotta keep truckin.

Its not that places arent hiring, its that im being overlooked by some pretty faced college kid from Northen Virginia Community College. They feel that im not old enough, which is really, we had a college kid come in and we dont want you damn kids running around here.

I find it hard to believe that im being passed up with 2 years in Retail (1 in KB 1 in Cox Farms) as well as highly regarded by my managers.

I know the economys bad, but its like i have everything set up for any retail job i want, and im just getting the cold shoulder. I hate being young.

Goodness you need to move to long island; every where I go I
see help wanted signs in all the windows!

Seems to me that with summer coming up, your best bet would
be places like sporting goods or clothing stores where sales are
seasonal - for example, when I worked at Eastern Mountain
Sport, we always hired people for the summer - mostly kids
home for the summer.

We had quite a few high school kids - they were always better
workers than the college kids ;)

It's a little late, but you can always look into paid internships, or
actually even things like getting a job with the parks
department or whatever; they are always looking for people to
do things like maintain trails, etc.

REED - If you feel that age is your primary limiting factor and that employers are going for the older people, it might be beneficial to you to get recomendation letters from your former employers (on company stationary), attesting to your skills and abilities.

With this in hand to present to a prospective employer, they may see you as more than a youngster and more like a person who has worked for two years and received recomendations from his employers. This may be what you need to give you the edge over the competition.
