Ok lets get this straight... This f ' n movie is only in Latin and Aramic with no English subtitles. I can make out about one third of what they are saying on those telemundo game shows with all the scantly dressed Latinas. WHat are ou supposed to do sit there with the good book and try to interepet whats going on ? PLLLEEEAASE

And I'm no Bible specialist, but doesn't the Bible basically say that the Jews of that time killed Jesus?

I mean if you're gonna get on Mel Gibsons case, then I guess we should just start ripping pages out of all the Bibles then!

I didn't read the piece, but I'm assuming that his father may have said some things that could be considered anti-semitic. To get all bent out of shape at Mel for these quotes is exactly the kind of hysterical, knee jerk, reactionary witch-hunting that this type of yellow journalism incites and thrives on. Even if his father is a card carrying member of the Nazi party, Mel should be judged on his own words and actions. Can we assume to know all there is to know about you and your opinions by having a discussion with your father? Would you want us to?

Edit: As far as the death of Jesus goes, while it was ultimately the Romans who nailed him to and hung him from the cross, it was the Jews that turned him over, and begged for his execution. The Jews, lead by Joseph Caiaphas, were motivated by fear for the own political well-being. They watched the rise of Jesus' power over the people and saw him not only as a threat to their own rule, but also knew the Romans would see it the same way. If the Romans saw the Jews uniting behind a single, charismatic leader they would have sent in troops to prevent and/or quash any type of rebellion. Up until that point, Caiaphas and his ruling body of Pharacees and priests were allowed fairly autonomous rule by the Romans, but they knew that that would end if the Romans felt a threat coming from the population. To say that the Jews hold no responsibilty for Jesus's death is to deny historical fact and is an Orwellian attempt to re-write history.

As a Catholic, who cares who killed Jesus? He died for our sins yadda , yadda. What is funny here is the jewish media once again overreacting to a percieved slight that might occur some time in the future. Please don't call me anti - semetic, I love the jewish people, some of my best friends yadda, yadda. The posturing does get out of hand though. Cut Mel a break will ya? He knows if it wasn't for the jews he would't have a career.

Wow. Sorry BJ. I wasn't bent out of shape at all. It wasn't my intention to imply anything. I was surfing late night (with a buzz) and came acrosss the article and also remembered the thing in the magazine section. I had no agenda whatsoever. I actually like Mel and his movies. I never posted a thread topic and just wanted to see if I could. BTW. The same goes for tonight and this reply -- a month late. I wanted to see if I could find the recipe Too Cute posted for a shrimp dish. So I did a search and this popped up. I never even knew anyone other than reeshy replied to this thread. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that unless Gibson has Jesus walking on water because he thought he saw a nickel on the other side of the dead sea then anti-semitism has nothing to do with the issue here. If you do any portrayal of Jesus you pretty much have to choose sides in some ancient religious question and someone's going to be pissed. But that don't make you anti-semitic, anti-christian, anti-leper or anti-anything else. Believe me, I know. Besides, Brian was the real messiah anyway so if you aren't wearing one sandal right now you're all going to hell.
