A family function? Not this early in the relationship. You don't need crazy drunken Uncle Phil to be pawing at her on the buffet line.

I took my girlfriend (now my wife) to a family party early on in our relationship. I found out later that my cousin grabbed her ass. If I had known at the time, I would have brained him.

So my advice? Don't do it.

i would say you guys could have a great time but the situation becomes a little "funny" when she gives a gift. Weddings are expensive today and you normally have to give at least a hundred dollars to cover a plate and then a little something extra for the bride and groom. That could be alot of money to someone who doesn't know your family that well. Then you get in a situation where your questioning whether you should give a gift for both of you?

do what you feel is best and let us know how it goes!

His name is willy, and shouldn't a problem

I know. My cousin and I discussed her plans last summer,
and shes having the reception at the place she used to work
and they are so setting her up lovely. i WAS gonna give
$100 for jsut me, so i figure $150 for two is plenty... besides
she knows i'm a college student and so is this chick, and my
parents (who are technically supporting me, i'm only 20 u
know) are going to give a nice check i'm sure... so i'm not
worried about a gift.

i think it may be just a little early. of course, this isn't absolute. in general, i would not think it prudent to invite someone to a wedding after knowing them for only a few weeks. it's kind of a big step, especially when it's a family member's wedding (i think a friend's wedding would be somewhat different). however, all relationships really progress differently, and this isn't to say that it's never a good idea. if you really feel that strongly about this girl already, then go ahead and ask her.

Were you invited to your cousin's wedding with "and guest"?
Who would you bring besides her? Just ask her if she wants to
go - maybe she does maybe she doesn't. Don't buy in to all the
it's too early crap - just do whatever feels right to you and her.

I think you should go for it. i'm sure you'll both have a good time. as far as the money thing, craig, you're right. your family knows you're in college and dont have the cash. i'm sure they'd believe whatever you give them would be more than generous.

Talk to her about it. She may feel that going to a familiy wedding this early in the realtionship is not something she cares to do. Conversely she might have a blast.

If your invitation says "and guest" it's the option of you and her whether you choose to attend the wedding together or not.

HA! At least you have a choice...my sisters wedding is in September and I have no one to go with me, plus Im moving to california in July, so I doubt anyone I meet out there wants to fly to Jersey just for a wedding. At least your in this predicament, unlike loser me!

Weddings are boring.

And since over 50% of marriages end in divorce, they're a sham!

so, you're one of them "glass is half empty" kind of guy... be more optimistic Moe... you never know, one day you may run into that "certain somebody" who will sweep you off your feet....

it's a strange thing... i think a man and woman can have a loving relationship their whole lives and be monogamous(sp?) to each other without getting married... but for most there is that "instinct" to marry... makes me wonder if many years down the road marriage will just become an "old custom" that's not practiced anymore...

FUNKMAN - That's a fascinating question that has sociologists scratching their head and muttering to themselves (not that they don't do that already!)

The "nuclear family" although still considered the norm, is not the most common type of family in the US. There are many more single parent families, step familes, cohabiting families, kin family (a larger group sharing living space, even if not related) and others.

What the future will bring is anybody's guess. I think that these factors and others will change the institution of marriage. Some have theorized and/or written about "short term marriage contracts" where a couple gets married and shares legal responsibilities for a fixed number of years. After that time the couple can either recontract or part ways. It's an interesting concept.

But no doubt you'll have some guys to hang out with. I've gone to weddings with and without dates. The best ones were the ones without dates. You can just let loose and muck it up.

Try to hook up with a bridesmaid. Preferably one that isn't related to you.
