View Full Version : Waking up early
Dear Horde King,
Why do I always wake up early after a night of drinking? One would think I'd be comatose for a while after my inebriation.
Sincerely,
The Al Dukes Fan

For me, it's usually the dehydration and the need to pee.

it's probably punishment for making your girlfriend worry about you.
or what mikey said.

Yeah I usually have no roblem falling asleep (no wonder, right?
because alcohol is a depressant), and I usually wake up needing
to pee and with a headache or something from dehydration.
I remember reading or hearing something last year though
about how alcohol affects the thalamus in your brain - I
honestly don't remember anytihng about the brain, but it was
something to the effect that when you drink alcohol, is disrupts
something (calcium channels maybe? It was something that
had to do with neurotransmitting so that would make sense
right?), and that the thalamus (this is where I am probably
wrong) helps to control your deeper leves of sleep...
the best I could come up with was this link:

but it really doesn't actually explain all that much...

Here's a novel idea...drink water.
No matter how sloshed I get, I always make sure to drink a couple glasses of water before bed. I wake up headache-free and at least 8 hours later.

Fortunately, I have no experience with ever going to sleep drunk. However, I do have major sleep problems, typically related to pain issues.
Here's the deal with alcohol. As Too Cute pointed out, alcohol is a depressant. As such it should be natural to sleep a long time the more drunk one is. However, the sleep itself is pretty messed up. Rarely does the person get beyond the 2nd (of 4) stage of sleep. Because the sleep is so light, it isn't hard to be awakened, which is a good thing, as the most common cause of walking up after drinking is to urinate.
On the very negative side, as a depressant, alcohol can interfere with your breathing patterns. For most people this isn't a major issue although it is quite a serious one, especially if you have chronic obstructive sleep apnea. Especially if untreated by CPAP or surgery, alcohol can worsen the effects of the apnea to the extent that you stop breathing and just never resume.

It's probably your subconscious reminding you to get up and hide all the gay porn and butt lube before your girlfriend comes over and discovers your horrific secret of a double life.
Oh...... ;)

when i wake up early after a long night of drinking, it usually means i'll be spending the day tossing my cookies

I usually look at the clock and ask myself, "A.M or P.M.?"
After that, "Where am I?" and "Who am I talking to?"

i believe it's a break in "normal" brain patterns. i'll guess you haven't shaken off the hang-over felling when you wake up early vs. sleeping in. take a pisss, get a drink of water and pass- out for another 4 hrs
