View Full Version : Unlocking Internet Explorer

Where I work some of the pc's in our office are locked down so that the homepage cannot be changed in Internet Explorer. We get an error that says something like "due to restrictions these changes cannot be made, please contact system administrator" But we would like to change it to what it should be. I could go through our corporate people to change it, but that will take forever. Does anyone know if there's a way to do something in the settings or registry to change the default to unlock it and fix the homepage?

Reefdwella - Of course the registry can be edited with the regedit comand, but it's very dangerous to do, b/c if it gets fucked up your computer can become unusable. (Always back up the registry before making any changes).
Realistically speaking, your company has a system administrator for a purpose and any changes should go through them.

The prefered methods are by hand in crimes of passion and by garrote by professionals.
I don't recommend either. Jail is a nasty place.

It could be done in the registry - the registry isn't THAT dangerous if you have a clue about what you're doing. Especially if you run a search. Just search for the URL that's currently set to your homepage. Make sure you find all possible results (if you find one, keep moving on until you see "Finished searching through the registry.") before you go changing anything. If you get multiple hits, try to approximate which one would be the best to change based on the path they're located in.
Wait, never mind, I found it. It's under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain
When you click the Main key, you'll see a bunch of values, one is "Start Page"..... change that to whatever you want.
BUT..... if the corporate IT team knows what they're doing, you will either not be able to get into regedit, or it will be changed back upon your next login (especially if you've got Windows 2000.... Group Policy is a beautiful thing)....

Thanks FTL, actually I meant to add to this thread, I figured out the home page in the registry as well. The IT department isn't the sharpest group out there, but they did manage to take away the "run" option from the start menu. Fortunatly for me I went into Windows Explorer and launched Regedit with the ole' double click, searched out Internet Explorer, found the line that had the start page entry and pasted in what it should be. That fixed the home page issue.
Thanks for the help though.

Jail is a nasty place
Free food
free excercise
free lodging and accomodations
free hot showers
tv/radio/books/games/play cards
medical care
free condoms for sex
drugs
booze
24 hour attendants/security
If I was poor or homeless, jail would be great,,,
