I accidentally left my home computer on all weekend while I was logged onto an internet site. I got home last night, closed the website, and tried to restart the computer. I got prompted to a black and white screen that asks me if I want to restart in a "safe" mode, to retry the last successful configuration, or to restart Windows XP all together. No matter what one I choose I get a blue screen that says that Windows XP has been shut down to prevent damage to my computer. The problem is

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

What the hell is that?

I've tried rebooting and even unplugging the damn thing.

Can anyone help??

Uh-oh....

I've dealt with this a few times at work. The issue usually involves re-creating your boot information, and can require editing the registry. I would recommend that you take it to someone knowledgeable in this, and not to a computer superstore. They will just reformat the machine and reinstall the OS.

Have you recently installed anything, particularly a CD-burning program? That caused the issue with the last one that I worked on.

I haven't installed anything recently. The most I've done is update Norton Anti-Virus.

Check this link out (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297185)

If this doesn't look like your issue, you'll have to give some more details.

Also, the method for repairing the file system in here may not work. I tried similar techniques, but sometimes they don't work, due to entries in the registry that load certain device drivers.

Hey Alice. Sounds like your Master Boot Record may be a little fuxored. You can try and boot the computer with the Windows Xp cd in the drive. Let it go thru everything then choose the repair method. OR, if you have a regular floppy start-up disk, get to the A:/ then type fdisk /mbr

Its is my deep seeded hatred and utter contempt for human life that gets me through each day

Yea, Grim is the man with comps. If at home solutions don't work, set up a day with him that you're both free.

I'm going to try starting it up with the XP start up disk. Wish me luck!

Grim, I may need to take you up on your offer!
