WHY DO THEY DESTROY THEIR OWN PROPERTY AS A MEANS OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE?
It's not like the "black community" owned all of those seven homes together. Unless the people who actually owned these buildings were smashing them, the people rioting sure as heck didn't view them as "their own property." If I started rioting around here, as long as it wasn't my apartment, why the hell am I going to be worried about the other stores and buildings? I'm RIOTING, dammit.
Think about it.
A riot is pretty spontaneous and off the cuff. It happens because people are pissed NOW. It's not a millitary strike. IF you could even get the rioters rounded up into some kind of carpool or bus trip, who's still gonna be mad enough to smash things? And it's not like there are leaders in a riot saying, "OK, YOU go that way, we'll flank to the left..."
It just happens.
Where else WOULD someone riot? You riot where you are. Demonstrations turn into riots where the demonstration takes place. It's not like the people get pissed, decide to move across town to a "better target", and THEN decide to riots. Riots occur in the rioters' neighborhoods because that's where the rioters are. It's not fucking rocket science. Riots happen as soon as possible and in the surrounding environment. That's the very nature of a riot.
is this a genetically coded reaction? or is it in the black riot play-by-play book?
