View Full Version : What do you do for chronic back pain?

I've had chronic back pain for years. It's my lower back and it immobilizes me like clockwork twice a year. The doctors say it's muscular. I think it's a pinched nerve. I tried accupuncture yesterday for the first time and I still have the paralyzing pain, dropping me to a knee in public places with people staring (damn lookieloos). I'm considering going back to the chiropractor. I'll try anything. Any suggestions?

There is nothing to do. I have back pain as well. Nothing works but time. If you have an episode that is high on the spectrum of pain, you must walk gingerly, move gingerly, go from a lying position to a standing up position gingerly - do everything with ginger. You may well decide to eat only sushi during this period, while watching reruns of Gilligan's Island.

But there is nothing that will work. Chiropractors are cranks. They are akin to the wizard of Oz whilst Toto is pestering him and revealing him behind the curtain. Ef all chiropractors, they are shams. Except perhaps Dr. Gerald Strauss in the Ft. Lauderdale area - he is at least an impressive sham.

There is nothing for you to do, sorry. You lose! You get Nothing! Good Day Sir!

I love them! I Love them! Both of them! Both of them are good! BOTH of them! Both Ron, and Fez! Oh, they are good! mmmmm! Juicy! They are good! Creamy! Creamy! I love them! Both of them! Ron and Fez! Ron and Fez! Oooooo! They are GOOD!

What did your doctor say to do for the pain?
Why do you think it is a pinched nerve? Have you had it looked at by a doctor?

I have chronic back pain too, it is just mechanical - because my spine is all kinds of crooked. When mine hurts, I take a lot of advil (as per my orthopedist's direction) but that rarely helps. I was told that surgery could possibly fix it, but not guaranteed. I'll live if all I miss is a night or two of sleep a year to the pain.

Go back to your doctor and ask him/her again what you should do - there's no way to know what is causing your back pain so what works for me might not work for you (oh and btw NOTHING works for me...) no actually that's not true - when I am riding horses twice a week, my back gets really strong and I don't have as many episodes of spasming. ehh. YMMV.

Chronic doesn't help my chronic back problem. Like I said, the doctors have told me for years that the problem is muscular. I just don't think sharp shooting pain is a muscle problem. I get pain down my leg too. I can hardly walk, I can't bend. I'm usually a mess like this for a week. If I'm still in excruciating pain tomorrow, I'll go to the doctor.

And laughter doesn't help because it's more like

Good luck. It's the working man's burden.

read the stuff written by Dr. John Sarno. according to him, chronic back pain is stress-induced.

just don't think sharp shooting pain is a muscle problem. I get pain down my leg too.

It very much can be a muscle problem - the pain shooting down your leg is being caused by something putting pressure on your sciatic nerve, which goes from your spine and down into your leg.

Muscle spasms can cause pressure on your sciatic nerve and cause that exact pain that you're describing (and that many of us are intimately familiar with).

Of course there are a number of other things (like herniated disks or lesions etc) that could be putting pressure on or pinching your sciatic nerve, as well.

If your doctor has already ruled these other problems out, then you're probably SOL. Maybe your doc can prescrive muscle relaxants for when it's really bad? I don't even know what would help- you have to ask your doc.

If you really don't trust your doc, then go see someone else and ask them for their opinion. Make sure you ask them to clarify anytihng you aren't sure about.

Just know that by "muscular" pain it's not that your muscles are in pain, but rather that your muscles are straining your sciatic nerve, and THAT is what is in pain :)

listen to too cute first, but i suggest procuring heavy narcotics. i have slight scoliosis and get laid out about 4x a year due to back spasms. usually the cause is a ton of stress and if i try to continue carrying on my "normal life," the longer it is for things to get better.

once it happens. i relax for as much time required. and narcotics definitely help relaxing, getting to sleep, and helping the muscles loose the tension. thrown a couple drinks on top, and it's an excuse to party.

but that's just me.

DJEvelEd - Unfortunately, the bulk of my disability is related to my back and the sequala of 5 spinal surgeries.

You wrote that you have chronic back pain for years and that it imobilizes you (for how long?) twice a year. You describe the pain as paralyzing causing you to fall to your knees in pain.

You further wrote that the doctors (plural) "say it's muscular." I take that to mean that you've been to at least 2 doctors for an opinion. I'll further assume that the doctors ordered diagnostic tests such as an MRI and/or CT scan.

You didn't indicate the results of these studies. You also didn't indicate if the back pain was truamatically induced or has always been a part of your life.

A "pinched nerve" or herniated or bulging disk, is actually a diagnostic term that is used when the CT or MRI studies show this. (Conventional X rays can show degenerative disc disease but not a pinched nerve.) A positive study will typically show disc material protruding from between the vertebrae and impinging upon the nerve. It's compresses the nerve, or "pinches" it, hence the term. I've found that chiropractors prefer the term pinched nerve, while orthopedists and nuerologists prefer the term herniated disc with or without spinal impingement.

The clinical symptoms of a pinched nerve (in the lumbar spine) is the presence of radicular pain going into your lower buttocks or legs. This can feel like a jolt of electricity into the area. Often an EMG/NCV (another test) is ordered in the presence of radiculapathy.

You don't indicate if this test was done. You also don't indicate (and I find this most puzzling) why you disagree with your doctors diagnosis. If you don't feel they're competent go to other doctors. At the very least see an orthopedist and nuerologist. Of course it would be most helpful to see them when the symptoms are active.

I'd advise against seeing chiropractors. I tried several courses, which didn't help at all but more importantly, over the course of 10 years I've taken testimony from (or cross examined) many doctors who say that chiropractors can actually worsen whatever condition you have. Nonetheless, it is clear that chiropractors do help some people some of the time. I would definitely see the doctors first.

My muscular spasms and spinal tremors occasionally call me to fall and always cause pain 24/7. Occasionally, the spasms are so severe, I can't drive or function in a meaningful way. I have some very powerful muscle relaxants as well as narcotics, but I try to stay away from the heavy duty stuff, b/c in order to obtain a theraputic dose (where it makes a difference that you're taking the medicine) it impairs cognitive functioning and I'd rather take the pain.

Many American's develop back pain at some point in their life. I recall reading that back pain was responsible for more sick days than any other cause.

On the very bright side, over 80% of back pain disappears completely over time. For the remaining people, it can usually be controlled by medication. (Anti-spasmotics used to treat epilepsy - which I also have) is one new trend in controlling pain. There are of course more drastic measures, such as surgery, pain pumps, electrodes, zapping the disk with heat etc.

But you can't do any of that or make any kind of informed decision unless you know what's going on, and you can't do that until you see the right doctors.

Please feel better and try not to panic during this severe flair up. You'll find out what's going on and then consult your doctors as to what you should do. Needless to say, always get a second opinon.

BTW have you tried epidural steriod injections, or a TENS unit?

I had the surgery in april for my pinched nerve. It is 100% better now. I had the pinched sciatica since 1988. You should check into it. GOOD LUCK!

read the stuff written by Dr. John Sarno. according to him, chronic back pain is stress-induced.

This book has literally LIBERATED me from scam artists like Chiropractors and other charlotens. The title is called "Healing Back Pain". Its a white book with a picture of a guys back on the cover and its paperback and very easy to read and I swear to you, if you read it and follow what it says, youll be free of pain in weeks after finishing it!
In a nut shell? Everyone, fit or not, has spinal abnormalities. By the time you are 20, the lower disks all people have dengrated. Pain is an "excuse" that a certain area of your brain (unconscious) uses to get you out of doing something {work/social events/you name it} beacuse everyone understands that you cant do something because you back hurts! Its a universal pain that everyone understands and accepts. BUT, in people like you (me) we are affected by it and it interferes with our ability to enjoy and live our lives to the fullest. Read the book to understand in simple, laymans english how this affects you. The guy who wrote it (Dr John Sarno) is a real medical doctor and knows what he is talking about and you will be amazed! It helped me big time!!

Keep in mind that your back needs to maintain an "S" shape in order to support you properly.
Often we sit or lie down or perform work in a way that straightens it out.
You can fuck up your back with bad posture.
Try lying down watching tv or reading with a pillow or two under the small of your back. The pillow/s need to be taking much of your weight.
Have everything you need before settling in- your snacks, your smokes, tv remote, beer, etc.
The idea is to restore that natural curve.
