HK,

I have a small fridge next to my desk here. Now it has this metal plate along the back of it which is now covered in frost.

1) Is there any way to avoid this?

2) What causes it?

Have you tried looking at the temperature setting on your fridge? It could be something as simple as it being set to cold.

One thing is that now that it is summer and it is getting more humid out, there is more moisture in the air to condense and freeze inside your fridge.

It is frosting up along the metal plate in the back because all the coils that provide cooling to the fridge are located behind that plate.

If raising the thermostat doesn't work, you could have other problems, like a dirty compressor or broken fan - eg your compressor might not be turning off properly or the fan might not be properly circtulating the cool air or whatever - check the back of the fridge and see if it is really dusty.

The frost in any fridge is due to moist air getting inside. I bet the seal along the doors inner edge is torn or missing in some place or it is opened too frequently. Its been extremely humid lately too!!

Torn or missing rubber sealing arounnd fridge could account for it.

So could improper drainage from the freezer space. (The part's pretty cheap). If there's a drainage hole from the freezer to the drop pan underneath, make sure it's not blocked by food or clogged.

Have you tried completely defrosting the fridge? It will take many hours to do so b/c you have to wait for all the ice to melt, but you'll be starting with a "clean slate" when finished.

Finally, is your fridge under warranty? If so, just call the manufacturer, explain the problem and let them figure it out. If a new part or sealant is needed they'll either send someone out or ship you the part free (depending on the manufacturer and terms of your warranty).

1) no torn sealing around the door.

2)Its a small fridge, no freezer therefore no clogged anything going to the drippan which doesnt exsist either

3) i know how to defrost it, but id like to avoid that. Its inconvenient.

Again: check your thermostat (that's my frist guess in a fridge that's freezing things), and if raising it doesn't stop stuff from freezing (after you've defrosted it. Sorry, you're going to have to defrost it), check the compressor and/or fan and make sure they're clean and working properly (eg not on constantly or off constantly - you can tell this by listening).

You also might just have to live with the frost during the summer. You're getting humid air into the fridge just by opening and closing the door. Wiping down the metal panel every day with a paper towel before it has a chance to freeze up could help.

You'll have to decide if a little inconvenience that may resolve a problem that vexes you is worthwhile.

Also, you forgot to mention if it's still under warranty.

And I forgot to mention the most obvious - check the manuel that came with the fridge. They may describe the very problem you're experiencing and offer the specific solution to resolve it.

Well it doesnt really vex me all that much. I have frost in there and it shouldnt be. the only prob i have is sometimes if my kids hold the door open some melts and makes it wet inside.

If its under warenty, i dont have any paperwork for it, besides as far as i know all fridges frost up. Im trying to stop that from happening in the first place and dealing with some prick trying to get a new fridge isnt my idea of taking the easy way out.

Now what about my air conditioner? Its old as fuck im sure, and sometimes it just totally frosts over in a matter of hours. Not good.

Set up a heater next to it to keep the Air Conditioner warm enough that it won't frost while you're trying to cool your room down.
