Why is it Bad to Swallow Chewing Gum?

Everyone always says you should spit it out, throw it out, but never swallow it. What does it do? Does it stick to your intestines or block them up? Or is it just an old wives' tale?

The bassist in our band swallows chewing gum all the time. It hasn't done her any harm, but it can't be good.

nope i have swallows tons of gum in my life and i am just fine. Why would they invent it if it were bad for you to ingest. I mean they would have to conceive of the notion that someone would swallow it at somepoint or the other.

Nothing much will happen if you swallow the occasional piece of gum; it's undigestible, like fiber and corn and celery strings so it will just go right through, relatively unchanged.

I did a google search on "what happens when I swallow gum" and found out that if you swallow TOO much (they mentioned a kid who swallowed 5-7 pieces a day) you can get constipated, sometimes for quite a long time afterwards.

Also just from reading too much about atkins recently, a lot of sugar free gums use various sugar alcohols as sweeteners (they're alcohols derived from sugar that don't affect blood sugar levels and don't promote tooth decay) and if you have too many of these, you can get diarrhea. Yummy.

I guess a lot of parents/grandparents are neglectful these days. Whatever happened to the old "If you swallow your gum/pit etc, a tree will grow in your belly!"

TC mentioned a kid who swallowed 5-7 pieces of gum a day!!! That's pretty extreme.

The occasional piece of gum will pass right through and if you care to inspect, it's usually to the left of the corn.

It's not bad to swallow chewing gum. Just don't put cianide on the chewing gum and try to make your landlord swallow it and if you do, please make sure you don't leave fingerprints on his refrigerator door! Now run free, Bingo!!!
