When and why did persons who are attracted to people of the same sex (I'm being politically correct) adopt the colors of the rainbow as their flag?

I was under the same impression as MOJO. That's the traditional explanation given to Jesse Jackson's "Rainbow Coalition" as well.

However, I found an interesting website that offers additional explanations. The site is brief but interesting particularly the discussion of the identification of certain colors with homosexuals in several eras.

ADF - That's mentioned on the link I posted, but it also mentions that it wasn't adopted as a gay icon until the 1980's.
