So, in between getting ready for a wedding this weekend, I found time for reading this book after picking it up on Saturday morning. Yeah, I admit it, I was down at the mall first thing Saturday morning with all the other geeks, hopping from foot to foot, barely able to contain myself. I was actually worried because I hadn't reserved my copy and didn't know whether they would have any in stock. Luckily for me, however, they did. Ahhhhhhhh, see? Even I, the suavest motherfucker you know, has a small chink in his armor of cool. So you can't be that bad off. But this is about the book, not me.
Just as all the others in the series are, this book is great! I'll and try not to give too much away here, I don't want to deprive anyone the pleasure of reading it, but it is really, really good. We get to see a lot more of the wizarding world, Harry and his friends really come into their own, and a lot more of the power of the older wizards, Dumbledore, Lupin, Black, The Weasleys and the all the Death Eaters as well. What is really most remarkable about the book is the way in which the politics and intrigue of the story are woven into it. Shit goes down at Hogwarts, at the Ministry of Magic and a couple of new places. We also learn a lot more about the connection between Voldemort and Harry, Ron comes into his own, Neville becomes a more central figure, and much much more.
If there is a bad thing to say about the book, and it's really not a negative, it's that it's very inconclusive. Where the other ones are definitely stories unto themselves, this one kinda leaves a flat ending. I fwelt like it was incomplete, the first half of a much bigger story. It's okay that it does that, but it really left me wanting more, which I guess is a good thing. The pace of the book is pretty good, the first half is awesome, but I found that it kind of lacked something in the second half. There were some moments later on that I just didn't quite feel as strongly about as I should have. I won't be anymore specific. Don't get me wrong, the book is terrific and I recommend it to anyone who's read the others. And if you haven't, this book is all the more reason to start. It sucks that we're gonna have to wait another 10 bajillion years before we get the next installment.

I'm only on book 3 at the moment. I'm a pretty new fan but I really enjoy the books. I rented Chamber of Secrets this weekend and I loved it. I have a lot of catching up to do to get where you are but I wanted you to know you're not alone in liking these. :)

But isn't all of this reading keeping you away from your chess club meetings and D&D tournaments?

But seriously. Why did people line up for this book like there was going to be a shortage? Did I hear that there was a record 1st pressing for it?

Little personal story:

Last week in the West Patersen A&P there was a PILE of about 30 of those books on a table ready to be purchased. So if A&P can get a pile, what's the big deal?

My son's not into it so I'm not reading the book. He's more intrested in Lord of the Rings.

So who dies in this book? Not Alan Ruckman's character (Hans Gruber?)

Just finished it today. Much darker in tone than the others and I really enjoyed it. Sucks waiting for the next one.

Thanks Jeff. I've been trying to make your heart sing ever since I saw your depressed post in the "Lets make a movie" thread.

That, and I know the staff are a bunch of racists!

I really enjoyed this book, not as much as the forth, but it was still very good.

The ending isn't as normal as the other books which is good, probably the way the 6th book will be to. Leading up to some kind of Finale in the 7th year.
