What do you do when you go to a friends wake and they have a viewing of the body? I was raised catholic but have since abandoned all forms of religion but at a wake when you go up to the casket i know you are SUPPOSED to say a little prayer or something. I kinda go up and inspect the body, check out the bad makeup job and look at the various trinkets in the casket, get kinda happy it's not me and then i'm on my way. What does everyone else do?

Pretend your in a movie and act like you're praying for your former friend. It's not fake if you're acting. (Say that to yourself while you do this). Then go out and have a drink.

I'm not particularly religious and neither was my dad. At his wake, my aunts with their matching black pant suits ("the hens") would go up to the casket every hour on the hour and pray. I was able to dodge that bullet for a while until they dragged me up there.
I closed my eyes and told my dad a joke.

I say a nice lil prayer and kinda reflect on that person and how theyve been a part of my life.
And Newport, even though you dont believe in any type of God or anything you should still say a nice prayer FOR the person. And if you dont want to do that, atleast say something nice about the person to yourself and move along. Dont just get happy because its not you, that sounds pretty mean.

I go to wakes and funerals and shiva for the living not the dead. I'm pretty sure that even the religious would agree that the dead are beyond caring what kind of service they have.
At the wake I went to yesterday afternoon, I spent the overwhelming bulk of time talking to my friend, paying my respects to her. Before I left, I stoped at the coffin, reflected on the transitory nature of life, and resoved to improve my life and the life of those around me to the best of my ability.
No prayer or reflections of supernatural necessary. Go to support your friend/relative. Go b/c your pressense, (or the cummulative pressense of lots of people) can be meaningful for the bereaved.

Im not as religious as my family wants me to be but I still think that putting on a nice wake and service for someone who has passed is a great gesture to that person. Sure they cant really thank you or anything but Im sure it would put a nice smile on somebodys face to see that you attended and said something nice about them after they passed on.
I mean Horde, wouldnt it make you happy to know that your friends and family came to honor you after you died?

That's is great. Do what you would do if the person could actually hear you. I don't feel that one needs to pray to a diety, if one doesn't believe in it. Personally i do, but I also talk in my head to the deceased.
My neigbor passed away mother's day weekend. At the wake I reflected on growing up in the neighborhood, my family, her family and everything that has happened in the years.
The night she passed away, she was terminaly ill, I prayed to her telling her that she had had a wonderful life and raised beautiful children, and grandchildren, and to not be afraid to let go.
My sister woke up from a dream two hours before she passed that my neighbor's deceased husband came for her and told her it was almost time to go.
I don't know why I threw that in, I don't know if I believe in these things but it does intigue me.

After I'm dead I'm past knowledge of these events.
IThe honor shown, the comfort brought is to the survivors and mourners.

I just see how long everyone else stands by the coffin. When it's my turn I bow my head and count "one-one thousand, two-one thousand..." until the requisite time has passed.
