If I had a set of 8 different numbers represented by ping-pong balls (lets say from 1-8), and placed them in a basket- How many possible combinations can I get if I pick only 3 ping pong balls. How bout if I pick only 2? Thanks for your help.

Three balls your picking from eight

Represent Three balls with:_ _ _

Now for the first choice, you have 8 balls to choose from so its
8 _ _

then if you keep it you have seven, and after that six, so it would be

8 x 7 x 6 = 336

but if you put it back after it would be

8 x 8 x 8 = 516

and thats your math lesson for today kids, tune in tommorow when we discuss Addition.

when asking this...is the combination 1,2,3 different then pulling them out 3,2,1 or would the fact that they are the same three numbers make it 1 combination? if its three numbers no matter when picked is one combo...then i think the answer is 56..

Ah, go ahead and put it back on. You're the only one who
got close to the answer (and you were only off by a
mathematical error) rather than make a smart-ass remark.
