Why are DVD's produced for separate regions of the world? Why not one for the whole planet?

Lets try this again shall we.

Dvd's are produced for the country themovies came out in, if we took every japanese dvd ever made with the germans ones, you wouldnt be able to read alot of them, most of them wouldnt be translated, and it would fill a whole wal mart entertainment sections alone. I think thats what your asking.

original post:
...to translate it?

Thought you were talking about one dvd in diffrent countries.

:) IM RETARTED :)

It's becaus emovies are released at different times around the
world. EG a movie might get relieased in Argentina 4 months
after it was released in the US. The movie companies don't wnat
the people in Argentina to be able to buy the DVD when it
comes out in the US because then they won't go to the movie
down there. Kind of retarded but that's the way it is.

My guess is so the company doesn't lose money buy people selling used DVDs over the Internet.

There are several reasons that DVDs are regionalized. Among them are (as was mentioned before) language. When you buy a region 1 (US/Canada) DVD, they usually have certain tracks for a few other language (spanish, french, etc). A DVD regionalized for parts of Europe (Region 2, which includes Japan, South Africa, the Middle East and Greenland) would have different languages available which would account for what countries it caters to (Japanese, etc).

Another reason is regarding the television format that is used in the respective Country. The US and Canada use the NTSC format, where as Europe uses PAL. While the DVD can fit a whole bunch of things onto a disc, I think that it would be unlikely that they would be able to fit a NTSC and PAL version of a movie along with more than a few languages to cater to a large number of countries.

There are DVDs that are region 0 (or Region All) and there are also DVD players that will play a DVD regardless of the region it came from. There are also Firmware updates for some DVD drives in computers that will allow them to play DVDs regardless of the region they are from (use at your own risk).
