You know, I've only seen two news stories about this, but its really pissing me off that they are trying to show that Thurmond redeemed himself by doing shit he should have done in the first place.

OMG!!!!! He support MLK day!!!! He voted to extend the voting rights act!!!!!! Way to go out on a limb, Strom, in letting blacks continue to vote!

I haven't even turned on Fox News to see what they'll say. I'm way too scared. They'll probably treat him like a national hero, not the horribly racist bastard he really is, or was.

Now that he's gone the world is a better place.

My Strom post from last December:

I had a short meeting in a Senate office on the same floor as Strom Thurmond's office. I rounded the corner to the meeting and saw ol' Strom coming out of his office with two of his staffers holding him up while he "walked". I passed the man and took a good look and he was like a mummy. His eyes were like a really old dog's eyes and he had no idea what was going on around him. I spent about 20 minutes in the office and when I came out Strom had just made it to the elevator about 40 feet from his office.

More Strom Facts:
-Strom Thurmond was born on Dec. 5, 1902
On that day:
-Thomas Edison took the witness stand to defend his company's right to sell his patented phonograph.

-The Senate Committee of Territories began negotiating a bill to add the state of Oklahoma to the Union.

Also in 1902...
-Theodore Roosevelt was president.

-Edward VII was King of England.

-An Acme Royal Top buggy sold for $54.90.

You want to know why I'm not cheering this man's death, assholes?

Because my family knew him. For decades. I've personally met the man myself.

My family is from Georgia / South Carolina. Members of my family knew him socially. His lifetime chief of staff is practically a brother to my father. And Strom's first wife? She was a distant cousin to my paternal grandmother. Which made the man, in a literal sense, family.

I make no excuses for the things he's done in his life. I just don't share in the joy of his death.

If you have a problem with that, please fuck the hell off.

He also was the first Senator to hire a black aide. I am not saying I support the guy or not. I am certainly not dancing with glee that a guy who served his country pretty well over 70 years is dead. Prior racist or not, it's idiotic that you all are pissing yourselves over his passing. How fucking hypocritical of you to blast a guy over one social norm and then go and violate another social norm yourselves. Fucking sad.

If you feel bad Strom is dead, hey, more power to you. Leave the rest of us alone. If there's karma out there it'll eventually bite us in the ass. But in the meantime, we're glad to see him go. Even beyond the racist past (Hey, wanna job, black guy? IT'S ALL OK NOW!!!), I view him as an absolute WASTE on the American government for at LEAST 30 years now. I feel NOBODY should be in ANY kind of political office above the age of 70 and I wish DEATH upon ALL of them because that's the ONLY way you'll pry the office from their gnarled old hands.

See? I'm glad he's dead. Boo-hoo.

If you're not? Great. Go with it. Death is death. It happens. People deal with it in different ways based on how they felt about the person.

Racism and joy over someone's death..."social abnormalities" on an equal level? HOOOO-AH.

holy shit, i'm all for state rights but why bitch about the supreme court the day they actually do something right? do you think homosexuality should be illegal?

*sigh*

My beef with the supreme court decision is as follows:

1. When did it become okay for the Supreme Court to legislate from the bench? I hate activist judges, conservative or liberal. It should be up to the states to decide whether they want these kinds of laws or not.

2. This has nothing to do with sex. What this has to do with is the Federal Government intervening in the affairs of a state. Next will come Gay marriages, which will then lead to the dissolution of states rights to make their own marriage laws.

3. These anti-sodomy laws are rarely enforced, if ever. This one was brought on by a neighbor with a grudge who called the cops saying a man was going crazy inside the couple's house which the cops entered and found them having anal. Its not like cops are busting down people's doors to see if they are having sex.

4. Who gave the Supreme Court the right to push their beliefs on all the rest of us?

Anyway, States Rights have been dying a slow death since 1865, and they don't have half the power they did before then. The Federal Government is getting way too powerful and scary. Just watch, in the next 30 years we'll be seeing things out West that will make Waco look like a picnic. The Feds own so much land out there and are imposing so many rules on the people there (i.e. environmental laws)that one day something will happen that's not so pretty.

I have nothing against homosexuals or what they do in their own homes. But when the Federal Judiciary starts legislating from the bench, then i have a big problem.

AMEN.

I'm all for for what this ruling passes, but it infuriates me that this thing basically just stomps the HELL out of states' rights. That's my biggest non-liberal leaning...the government imposing federal laws and rulings over state governments. NO GOOD.

I thank Bergalad for having some understanding.

If there's karma out there it'll eventually bite us in the ass.

Well, one can hope. Or pray, whichever is more accurate.

AMEN.

I'm all for for what this ruling passes, but it infuriates me that this thing basically just stomps the HELL out of states' rights. That's my biggest non-liberla leaning...the government imposing federal laws and rulings over state governments. NO GOOD.

This just in:

Sodomy Law Repeal Jeopardizes Thousands of Cop Jobs
(2003-06-26) -- Today's U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning a Texas ban on homosexual sodomy threatens to put thousands of police officers out of work.

The 6-3 decision effectively makes obsolete the hundreds of local sodomy law enforcement battalions nationwide. Police forces now have no use for the officers formerly employed to kick down doors where homosexuals were violating the law. The ruling will also put thousands of judges on part-time status as the docket is cleared of the numerous sodomy law cases.

In related news, John Lawrence and Tyrone Garner, the plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case, said they're glad sodomy is legal now, because they have missed engaging in it since their arrest in 1998.

Well thank God, now those HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of sodomy cases shall no longer clutter the courtrooms!

But the Court made a rather bold move:

Supreme Court: Texans Too Stupid To Rule State
(2003-06-26) -- In a little noticed addendum to today's Lawrence and Garner v. Texas decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the citizens of Texas are not intelligent enough to rule their own state.

Writing for the majority, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy noted, "Representative government is a good notion as far as it goes. But the citizens of Texas clearly lack the mental ability to elect representatives and make laws properly. We'll be keeping eye on them to protect them from themselves."

Justice Kennedy also wrote that "citizens of many other states probably lack the intellectual capacity to rule themselves as well, which is why the Supreme Court exists, and why none of us can afford to retire. Imagine what would become of this nation without our sovereign rule."

You know, I half-agree with them.

I'm for state rights, but when one's voters are stupid enough to elect Democrats who flee the state rather than allow a Republican victory, maybe the state of Texas IS too dumb for its own good.

1. When did it become okay for the Supreme Court to legislate from the bench? I hate activist judges, conservative or liberal. It should be up to the states to decide whether they want these kinds of laws or not.
Not if they violate the Bill of Rights. Argue that sex isn't in the Constitution and I'll always be able to find something in there applicable to consentual sex between adults in the privacy of their own home.
2. This has nothing to do with sex. What this has to do with is the Federal Government intervening in the affairs of a state. Next will come Gay marriages, which will then lead to the dissolution of states rights to make their own marriage laws.
It is about sex - it's a sodomy law! What this have to do with the state intervening in the affairs of Mojo and Moe. And the slippery-slope argument goes both ways - next the states will outlaw sex out of wedlock.
3. These anti-sodomy laws are rarely enforced, if ever. This one was brought on by a neighbor with a grudge who called the cops saying a man was going crazy inside the couple's house which the cops entered and found them having anal. Its not like cops are busting down people's doors to see if they are having sex.
So this case is an excellent example of how these laws can be abused. Good point.
Who gave the Supreme Court the right to push their beliefs on all the rest of us?
Why give a state government the right to push their beliefs on all the rest of us? If we're going to legislate sex, it has to be limited to non-consentual, minors, and women turning me down, that's it. All other restrictions against sex is an imposition of one set of morals on Americans.

Sodomy Law Repeal Jeopardizes Thousands of Cop Jobs

Who the hell cares about this garbage! Policemen should work by the law and not use these absurd laws to work around what we like to consider "search and seizure". If you want to create an all power SS force or Secret police which holds to no laws say so....but don't make seem as if this is somehow legitimate of police to do. If they have legitimate cause to question or go in someone's home they should have the proper facts, warrants or at least abide by legitimate laws. To accompany policemen losing their jobs compared to having a law where gay people can't have sex is grotesque and a bogus claim to the civil liberties of our nation.

Then that should be the decision of the peoples of the State of Texas or Virginia to make, not the Supreme Court.

mudo, i agree, i'm all for states rights, distribution of power too, but you can always bitch thats what the supreme court does, or any federal power. why specifically complain when they do something that exactly exands individual's rights?

Because this decision should be a matter to be determined among each individual state. If the people of Virginia don't want sodomy laws, then theyll get rid of them. If they want them, theyll keep them. It's not the Supreme Court's job to make laws from the bench for Virginia and Texas.

on a side note i'd also like to hear your argument on why gays shouldnt be allowed to marry...

I never said gays couldn't or shouldn't marry. Hell they can do whatever the hell they want to as far as im concerned. But when someone sues say the state of Maryland trying to marry their partner and it goes to the supreme court, and the court makes another decision like this, there goes the power of states to make marriage laws. Whats next, Federalized DMV's(the smell is bad enough in there already)?

It's not the Supreme Court's job to make laws from the bench for Virginia and Texas.
And it doesn't and didn't in this case. The Supreme Court determines the constitutionality of laws, state and federal, that's it's job. The point of a constitution, (and specifically the Bill of Rights), is that individual rights are superior to state's rights.

What this has to do with is the Federal Government intervening in the affairs of a state.
Then why would you choose an issue in which the federal court is preventing the state government from intervening in the affairs of individuals?

Because this decision should be a matter to be determined among each individual state. If the people of Virginia don't want sodomy laws, then theyll get rid of them. If they want them, theyll keep them. It's not the Supreme Court's job to make laws from the bench for Virginia and Texas.

you didnt answer my question. why is this decision so much different than anything else the supreme court has ever done? that's my question.

Bingo.

I said a person's death means a million different things to a million different people. He's not "family" to the rest of us. And they way we respond doesn't hinder or force you to not react in whatever way you wish.

Fair enough.

But hopefully now people will understand where I'm coming from, and not just simply dismiss my reaction as that of a conservative sympathizer.

Like some people have already done in this thread.

Oh, to Five & Hbox: the Onion isn't the only website out there that does parody & satire about political events.

This was very funny to read, especially from someone who is so eager to write off others (like myself) as liberal commie socialists. If you aren't going to give others the benefit of the doubt, don't expect it back.

Of course I knew that was a hoax article. Doesn't mean that it didn't belittle what was a victory for personal privacy.
