So could ya? I have a friend who whenever he sees a black person says "oh stupid blacky, get a job to himself." but he so small if he told that to the guy, hed get his ass kicked. Not only does he do this all the time, but he thinks its funny and laughs, while we all just stay quite, usually ill slap him after a comment like that, cause im not a fucking moron. And whenever were around our big black friend, he doesnt say a word, and is in constant fear, whereas everyone else feels a million times safer with a 350 black guy around, as son as hes gone its back to "oh black go listen to your rap music and dont rape my daughter..." Its pretty fucking gay, and we dont talk to him much anymore.

So could you deal with a racist friend?

I had some old friends that used to crack Black and Jew jokes. Many others. I mean, we all joke about races sometimes in here, but these guys meant it in a malicious way. They were convinced of their superiority.

I must admit that back before I knew who I was fully I'd laugh at the jokes.

But that was then, and this is now. I don't see those people anymore. The time for being a child was over, and real life crept up. People of every race just want to make a decent living for them and their families, and as I found that out I discovered how wrong those assholes where, and how happy I was to be away from them.

Sure, I deal with a few racists friends all the time. I don't pay it much mind cause it is rooted by repetitive behavior that have tendencies to be practiced by particular races. While I don't agree with racism I can surely understand how some people have come to be that way. Stereotypes don't come out of thin air.

Its weird cause some kids down here try and be someone, so they think they can be a reborn southerner, and they wear the confederate flag and claim thier house is always open for southern hospitality, and what a shocker, they dont like the black guys.....

1. its virginia, were the TECHNICAL south, and yes the battles were fought here, but the real south is in Alabama and South Carolina.

2. The south wont rise again, and from what i saw in Richmond, id say its still in reconstruction.

3. Theyre preppy rich white kids, and no, your suburban home isnt your plantation.

I could deal with them, but it depends on how racist they are. I have one friend who is racist against blacks. But he doesnt openly bash them and very rarely even mentions or brings up his racism when hes around me. He made it clear when we started hanging out that hes a racist but he doesnt go parading around about it, so im cool with that.

Hells YES!!! Especially when I lived down in Mississippi and Alabama.

You should see all the freaking faces when people not like them, came to my parties, it's was a blast just watching this stuff. But boy, do they know the color of money. I'm still cracking up at Trent Lott when he came to town 1 time. He was a gumpy old geezer.

But are you part racist if you say, "I'm not a racist, I have (fill in the race) friends". I have a blast telling them- "There you go, you just proved my point!".

And there in lies the REAL problem with racists. Their underlying feelings of superiority. Somewhere along the line they started to think or were taught to think that they are somehow BETTER than a whole group of people.

So this arrogance will show through in other areas of thier life, not just when dealing with their least favorite race.

I've lived both North and South (currently) of the Mason-Dixon line, and trust me, racism knows no borders.

But to answer your question, nope, I couldn't be "friends" with a racist... although I have had to hold my tongue in business and "acquaintance" relationships.

When I was in elementary school, we had a girl in our class who was from Vietnam. One day when we returned from Gym she found something written on her desk. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it left her crying. Later one of my friends told me he did it. I stayed friends with him for awhile. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize what a horrible thing it was that he had done. By that time, I had drifted away from the friend who had done it. If I ever meet him again, I'd punch him in the face. In High School, I actually ended up being friends with the girl.

It gave me some perspective. After that, I don't think I can ever associate myself with people who are truly racist. I feel embarrassed enough that I did for that amount of time.

Ehh, my mom and grandmother are racsist so what can I say. But then, to them ANYONE (I think even me) who wasn't born Japanese is looked upon as inferior so what can I do? I'm sure thta I have racsist friends. But as long as it's something that they've kept to themselves and hasn't manifested in front of me, what can I do? I honesly doubt however that I would be close frends with anyone who was a racist. The kind of people that I associate with just haven't grown up the kind of life that lends itself to such personality traits.

Well, yes, that's the point. I get the feeling (at least it is true in my case) that people who make race/sexual orientation/nationality/etc. jokes in a forum like this (or say on O&A or R&F) can do so largely because it is such a NON issue to them. It's like making making a joke about anything else. For the most part I feel comfrotable that if I say "Oh look at that picture of Justin Timberlake! He's so gay" in a place likfe rf.net, most people aren't going to take that as offensive (in all honestly, I use the word gay so often; I think at least in my usage I intend it to be as about as offensive as if I were using the word "gypped" - which is to say, not at all. It might have offensive origins but I think it's well enough entrenched in the modern lexicon to be independent and removed of its homophobic origins.)

I'm jewish so i'm technically a minority. I don't look jewish so i've heard every joke or racist comment. In fact sometimes for fun i let them go off, and then go I'm jewish and see the look of terror on their face. I've had money thrown at my feet all that fun stuff but personally i fell that racist comments aren't that bad.
Saying stuff against a race can be hurtful but you shouldn't be hiding it. In fact the only time that we will have racial unity is when we can make fun of each other back and forth with no hard feelings.(i know this will never happen). HOWEVER if you act upon these feelings thats when it crosses the line. You can't help but think something if you prejudiced(until something happens to change your perspective) but you can try to overcome it. Any action against someone and in my opinion I won't want to see you let alone hang out.
For example, One of my ex-girlfreinds seemed cool at the begining, but slowly became more and more blantantly racist....againts jews wtf. It turns out that she was going to try to convert me, that was her goal. needless to say I haven't talked to her since.
if the guy is nice but prejudiced you can still hang out with him just tell him to shut his mouth around you. you can't control his thoughts, but as long as he controls his actions i think it should work out.

edit: i realize that i referred to racism to jews. I don't feel that jews are a race, but there wasn't a better way to say it
