Well, if you don't pay your rent you will be meeting the sheriff when it's time to be evicted. Or, you can rack up some tickets on your car and he will be there while your car is being towed:)
Its is my deep seeded hatred and utter contempt for human life that gets me through each day

I thought Marshalls did those kind of things. So now what is the difference between a Marshall and a Sheriff?

In most NY State counties, Sheriffs are the local Corrections Dept. They run the county jails and security in the local courts. In the smaller counties upstate, they also do local law enforcement patrols.

Straight from their web site...
"The modern-day New York City Office of the Sheriff was created in 1942, pursuant to Chapter 44 of the City Charter. That 1942 Charter amendment abolished the county sheriffs from each of the five boroughs, transferring and consolidating their powers into a single citywide authority. Currently, the Sheriff has its central executive offices in the Manhattan Surrogate Court Building at 31 Chambers Street, and one field office in each borough.
The Department of Finance Office of the Sheriff (Sheriff) is the chief civil law enforcement agency for the City of New York. The jurisdiction of the Sheriff spans the entire legal spectrum, overlapping both civil and criminal law. Sheriffs enforce judicial orders issued by the New York State Family, Supreme, and Surrogate Courts, as well as those issued by the New York City Civil and Criminal Courts.
From an operational perspective, the Office of the Sheriff is divided into two units: the Private Sector Unit and the Public Sector Unit. The Private Sector Unit provides civil law enforcement services to the business community and general public throughout the City of New York. This unit processes legal documents, such as summonses, subpoenas, orders, and writs. It is also responsible for the seizure of property that will either be safeguarded pending a future decision of a court, or be applied towards the satisfaction of a judgment that has already been rendered. The Public Sector Unit is responsible for reducing debt owed to the City by providing full judgment collection and enforcement services to creditor agencies and by also augmenting the City's own debt-collection efforts"

On November 7, 2000, Connecticut voters overwhelmingly chose to eliminate the office of High Sheriff. On December 1, 2000 all Special Deputy Sheriffs in all counties throughout the state were transferred to the Connecticut Judicial Branch and re-designated 'Judicial Marshals'. Deputy Sheriffs were also transferred to the Judicial Branch and became 'State Marshals.'
CT eliminates the office of High Sheriff after 350 years (http://www.jud.state.ct.us/external/news/press40.html)

You want the real answer to what a sheriff does?
He strokes his Johnson while lighting his cigar with 100's he took as a pay off to look the other way on something.
