I'm actually really looking forward to this flick. For those who think it look silly (like you McNabb) I suggest you take a look at the comic on which the movie is based.
There are some changes for the movie which I'm fond of (Quartermain not being such a fucking junkie, the addition of Dorian Gray), and some which I'm not (Mina being turned into bad-ass vampire chick), but overall, I think the movie looks pretty damn fun. I dig steampunk anyways.

This is going to suck! From what I've heard, they butchered the comic, making very action-oriented instead or story-oriented like the comic. Come on, Fuckin tom sawyer as an adult US gov agent?

What?
Are you conveniently ignoring BOTH X-Men movies? Spider-Man?
Hulk, for its bad word-of-mouth, was still a GOOD movie, Daredevil was a decent flick even with Affleck in it, and the Blade movies, though lacking in real story or substance, were still very entertaining.
How about Road to Perdition? Did you like that? COMIC BOOK MOVIE. Yes, it was a comic first.
Comic book movies have come a long way, and for the better. I mean, hey, maybe this movie will suck (it is a movie based on a DC Comics' property, and they seem to have their head up their ass lately), but you can no longer automatically assume it will be bad just because it's based on a comic.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Read the comic book. Moore pulled popular characters from great pieces of literature. Quartermain, the Invisible Man, etc. are not gov. agents in thier original stories either. It's just a plot convention.

Hes partially correct on that statement, daredevil stunk, and i dont know why it got such rave reviews but i thought spiderman was all it was cracked up to be. X-men is an exception though it was a good movie and so was x-men 2. And i cannot compliment on the Hulk because i havent seen it, but what i hear its alright. And Road to Perdition was a very very good movie.

actually, I know exactly what i'm talking about. I have read the comic. the comic consists of only english characters, but to make it more palatable to American audiences, the movie will have Tom Sawyer as an US Agent (i don't mind Dorian Gray in there. I think he fits the original tone of the comic).
I think this is a horrible idea. I enjoy the comic because its about characterization and plot, as opposed to just action, which is what this movie is obviously going for. they are taking a thinking man's story and turning it into a no-brainer.

I saw it this weekend. I have almost no opinion on the movie. I didn't enjoy myself, but I didn't hate it either. I have never felt more blah about anything in my life. I'd never go out of my way to see it, but if it were on HBO, I might watch. It was just an incredibly average movie.

I hate the fanboy bullshit about "staying faithful to the comic" Comic books aren't even faithful to their own continuity. Whenever they feel like it, Marvel will start comics like Spider-man all over again, changing nearly every detail!
I don't know about DC, though because I don't read a lot of DC comics. The latest Batman movie sucked balls and it was cheesy as hell.
If they continue with the franchise, they need to have better costumes and it has to be as dark as the comic book.
I won't see The Leauge because I want to save some of the summer movies for video.

I just looked at this thread for the first time in a while and dddaammnn, I got my ass kicked here.
Im still gonna stick by what I said though. And I did say "usually suck" not "always suck."
There are comic book based movies that I do like. I liked Spawn, Spiderman, the Superman movies and a few others. I didnt like XMen personally but i will say it was a good movie.
But come on. Hulk was nothing but graphics. Daredevil, same. Men in Black wasnt even good, but the spectactular parts were all graphic generated, the aliens and shit. I never saw either Blade movie. The Batman movies werent too good at all, i'd rather watch the Batman cartoons on Cartoon Network then the movies. I didnt think the Mask or Crow were any good.

Love ya Jeff, but I saw every one of these movies and this is a list of some of the worst movies ever made. Spider Man was probably the worst movie of the past ten years. The XMen movies were a waste of celluloid. Just saw X2 - probably the worst movie I've ever seen (but didn't walk out on) and I've seen thousands. The Hulk - I walked out, as I did the Blade movies. The MIBs sucked ass. I would have walked out for MIB1 but I was on an airplane. MIB2... I would have jumped...
Perfect examples of what is wrong with movies today. Of the above list, The Crow was OK and some of the Batmans were fair. Star Wars was OK, but that wasn't a comic I guess.
Of course this is just my opinion....The best movies of this season for me have been Capturing The Friedmans and A Mighty Wind.
And just so you don't think I don't like adventure/sci fi movies....there are tons of great ones but I agree with the poster who said there has yet to be an even decent comic movie. I will hold out for a good CGI Silver Surfer movie though before giving up all hope. Of course, they'll probably kill that by casting Travolta or Ben Asslick.
I might like League, however, since it looks a little like Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is one of my favorite movies.

You don't even like comic book movies! A mighty wind? Even though people have said that movie was funny, I'd probably say it sucked.
You hate these comic book movies and yet you keep going to one after another.
The crow was barely a "comic book" movie. I mean, if the average person went to that movie, they wouldn't know a comic book is out there.
Kaga, i'm not gonna bag on you because you seem like the b-type guy. The type of guy who wants his movies as realistic as possible. You're the Ron to our Fez.
Spider-man was great, but the graphics could have been better.
Spawn SUCKED! The costume design was top nitch and John Leguizamo was great, but Hell looked like a joke and the movie went on for a bit too long.
X-men was very good and I haven't seen X-2 yet.
Spawn 2 is in development hell and i hope they do something better with it.

No. Spiderman was awful. The effects were awful. The acting was awful. And above all, the writing was awful. The cheesiest of the cheesy - I mean, you take something like batman or superman, where you have cheesy lines, but at least they're not trying to hit you over the head with them. Meanwhile, in spiderman you have that shit like when he says to the guy "I forgot the part where that was my problem" or whatever the line was, or when the stupid old woman is like "You're not superman, you know". Awful. I turned off the movie after 40 minuts or so and I'm just upset that I can't get my money back for the stupid DVD. And there weren't even any hot guys to make it bearable, like the X-men movies (which I thoroughly enjoyed, though I wouldn't call them good movies).
Spiderman stinks, and I hate it.
Oh and jeff, I hated the TMNT movie. Give me the cartoon any day.

Indiana Jones didn't need "Matrix"-style kung fu and blazing machine guns.
And generally, if you weren't really a big fan of comic books, you're not going to like these films. As much as fanboys bitch, they're all deeply steeped in "comic book"-style entertaining, so if you were never ga-ga over the source material, why would it be any different for the film?
Some comic book films sneak up on you without you even realizing what they are. "From Hell", "Road To Perdition" and "Ghost World" are all directly based on comics of the same name, and are each rather fine films.
"The League", however, looks like it took out everything I loved about the book, namely intelligent fun. BAH.

I saw the movie yesterday, it was pretty good, lots action with some jokes here and there, but overrall good movie. Special effect and acting was good, I might see it again, if I have the time. I rather enjoyed Spiderman, but toocute was right the movie had a lot of chessy lines. The x-men movies were great not a oscar winning movie, but entertaining like any form of comic or sci-fi movies, from lotr to star trek to star wars. There are going to be excellent movies, and okay movies. Comics book movie will be in the okay to great area due to CGI. Movies have become so dependant on special effect acting takes a back seat.

But Spider-man naturally is cheesy! If you pick up any random Spider-man book you'll get very cheesy lines, often with pop culture references. Am I so bad for enjoying the dialouge in Spider-man?
My fav scene was when spider man started taking on robbers and other bad guys. Spider-man descending from a lamp post and getting the jump on a robber? Great!
And I kinda felt for mary jane and her struggling acting career.
The only thing that was out of character was the end when MJ is gushing over Peter Parker and she's bascially willing to give up the balloon knot to him. Now that, I agree was cheesy and soap opera-ish.

You hate these comic book movies and yet you keep going to one after another.
The crow was barely a "comic book" movie. I mean, if the average person went to that movie, they wouldn't know a comic book is out there.
I keep going to them cause Too Cute likes them or thinks she's gonna like them. I go there with the best intentions but maintain that I have yet to see a good one. I go to these movies (or watch them when she buys the DVD) and then she reciprocates by watching movies I like that she might not like Se7en, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Gangs of New York, Rushmore, Fist of Legend, American Psycho, The Big Lebowski, Leon (The Professional) or Fight Club or the classics like Seven Samurai, The Seventh Seal, The Godfather, or The Bicycle Thief.
I like sci-fi movies, loved Star Trek, BladeRunner, 2001, shit like that and adventure movies (The Man Who Would be King, Raiders, etc.) I think when it comes down to it, I like what I think are good movies. And those comic book movies...to me...do not have the elements I consider when judging a good movie.
But I have totally capitulated to the reality that a movie like Spiderman would be a top grossing movie (as much as I hated it) while Capturing the Friedmans or The Piano Teacher get lost in art house purgatory.
Bottom line, if translated to another art form....to me... comic book movies are the Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Puddle of Muds and Trains. The movies I like are the Wilcos, Drive By Truckers, Fountains of Waynes, Weezers, Fugazis, Miles Davis', Shostakovich's and Tribe Called Quests.
Now if you told me that The Third Man or Chinatown was based on a comic book...I'd be all over it.
PS - I don't think it was a comic, but The Matrix and Reloaded also were some of the worst movies ever made in my book. Office Space, however, is one of the best movies ever.

No, HK is right this time. Supermans 3 & 4 suck.
And I've talked movies with both The Chairman and TooCute and like the movies that each of them like. I liked LOTR, I liked The Royal Tanenbaums. But I also count the Crow and the X-flicks among my faves. Alternatively, for me, last week was "foreign film week" for me, with such luminaries as The Eye (Hong Kong horror) and Dog Soldiers (British action/horror).
If someone doesn't like a genre, they aren't going to like most of the films in that genre. That's life and you'll have a hell of a time convincing them otherwise.
And Chairman, if you liked Office Space, try PCU and How I Got Into College. To me they are the trifecta of satire of my life...

That's retarded. I don't get upset in the slightest when someone (ahem chairman) tells me that LotR was the worst movie they've ever seen.

But that's different. They're stupid for dissing LOTR and you know it.
Spider man had its flaws, so I'm protecting it. So does this mean I can't dream of your elfin ears on the lonely nights?

Because you're wrong. ;p
I wish Brandon was still alive. Damn
As do I.
I believe that had he lived, he would have become a fairly big star in Hollywood.

That's right vegeta...I'm stupid.
By the way, how old are you? I won't take being called stupid by you as an insult. In fact, if you need an adult to get you into PG-13 movies, I'll say I'm your daddy and even buy you some popcorn.

I was on the show long before the first lights out party, tardbrain.
But getting back on topic, I would like to see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It looks like my kind of movie.
Assuming it's not as retarded as spiderman.

Hey, it was all a beautiful blur to me. I just heard sexy voices and they all blended together.
I'll wait for DVD, not because I think the movie sucks, but just because I trust comic book movies like X-men more than the Leauge, which I never read.

Grant
You didn't even like the Lord of the Rings films! Clearly this genre is not your cup of tea, which is fine...but how can you dismiss ALL of the comic book movies as garbage? Some of these movies are technically superb, competently directed and acted and very entertaining.
like sci-fi movies, loved Star Trek, BladeRunner, 2001, shit like that and adventure movies (The Man Who Would be King, Raiders, etc.) I think when it comes down to it, I like what I think are good movies. And those comic book movies...to me...do not have the elements I consider when judging a good movie.
Which Star Trek films did you like? I'm a Star trek FANATIC and I hated the majority of the Star Trek films. Most of them were pure GARBAGE (mainly the Next Generation series, but Final Frontier and Undiscovered Country were total shit.)
But I have totally capitulated to the reality that a movie like Spiderman would be a top grossing movie (as much as I hated it) while Capturing the Friedmans or The Piano Teacher get lost in art house purgatory.
Art house films are a lot to swallow, especially if you just want to relax with some bubble gum fun for a night and escape with your favorite superheroes as they blow shit up and fuck women. I would NEVER debate thier superiority in terms of emotional and dramatic content, but sometimes they are just NOT entertainment I am looking for on a Friday night. Not everyone wants to leave the movie theater contemplating the intricities of life, death, love, etc. Sometimes they just want to leave with a smile on thier face.
As for Superman III and IV, for those of you who are not HARDCORE comic book fans, don't even bother seeing movies like these. PURE GOLDEN AGE FUN! Nuclear man!?! Cmon...those nails! That costume! Hilarious! Gene Hackman as Luthor...the greatest! And Superman III?! The supercomputer? Richard Fucking Pryor!!?!? That crazy computer bitch at the end?!? The best! Your standards are just wayyyy too high....this is some great fluff!

I have to agree with Jeff, with the exception of Superman III&IV. Remember, gay Batman and Robin almost killed the genre and the X-Men brought it back. The reality is that maybe 20% of these comic movies are actually good movies, the rest are for comic fans, kiddies and Happy Meal toys. All of these movies are enjoyable because of the lack of thought needed to enjoy it.
I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Haven't we all had quite enough of that liverspot Sean Connery and his froggish delivery? I mean, the whole gig is stale by now, and it just keeps getting crustier and craggier and almost Paul Harvey-ish in its gutteral phlegm-caked wonder.
How this guy still works himself out to be a hot deal with the ladies is unreal. Probably hangs with blue-haired shuffleboarders in Boca.

I thought the "Official Website" was pretty good! With all the bios, it kind of gives you an insite into where the writers and director are coming from. Cant wait to see it.
