I just read a great new book today about John Romero and John Carmack, the founding of id software, the rise of Doom and Quake, and the infamous fall of Ion Storm. It's called Masters of Doom by David Kushner.
It's really worth a read if you are at all interested in Doom and Quake. It was really interesting; Carmack is a fucking programming machine, the making of Quake was one huge clusterfuck, Daikatana even moreso (obviously). The best parts are before Doom, when Carmack, Romero and crew are stealing computers from their job and working on them over the weekends for their own projects, the first of which was a Super Mario Brothers 3 PC port that Nintendo had no interest in.
It was a really great book, it took me only this afternoon to read the whole thing.
