I went to Montreal this past weekend (to see Pearl Jam) and noticed many things. One obviously, distinct thing I noticed was that most people spoke 2 languages fluently without a problem. Anyone ever wonder or feel less cultured/ educated when entering a different envrionment? Just curious.

Btw...2$ and 1$ coins are just annoying. Walking around clinking and clanking like a piggy bank...ugh.

dont I know it. I've been to Switzerland and a lot of people there speak
swiss german
english
french

and can switch between the 3 w/o difficulty. Of course you can run across older people who don't speak english, so cobbling together some french and italian that my wife knew worked somewhat.

It's one of those things where learning a language early is way easier than later in life.

I am in total agreement with Too Cute.

Don't buy into the whole uncivilized uncouth American concept.

Uh..that's kinda snooty. I was merely asking if anyone had any observations about traveling, barriers or such. Apparently we've found out you, Too Cute can be placed in any society regardless of customs and langauge and be confident...or something? Riiiiggghhhttt...

Btw...I wasn't implying that Americans were uneducated or uncoth nor did I say that.

What does feeling great about yourself wherever you are have to do with being snooty?

I feel as comfortable at Tavern on the Green as I do at a strip club.

I'd wear the same clothes to both.

I'm cool like that.

Plus the foods much better at most strip clubs than it is at Tavern on the Green.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I think it's normal, humble and charming to feel a little uncomfortable in a different environment initially. Unless of course you're TooCute and you don't care because you ooze self esteem and confidence.

You must be speaking of the ladies room. The men's room smells of flop sweat and desperation.

The question is:

Anyone ever wonder or feel less cultured/ educated when entering a different envrionment?

My answer is no. I am confident and comfortable with my level of "culture" and "education". What is so difficult to understand about that?

Can we back up and point out where being comfortable with yourself enough anywhere is somehow not humble or snooty?

I don't ever feel like I'm less cultured or educated than anyone. I usually think everyone will hate me, but those are my own deep dark issues that never come to fruition. (I think it has to do with possibly expecting the worst so that I can be surprised by pleasantries).

Anywhere I go, I simply know I belong there. I think that it comes from self esteem, confidence, and grace. If you think you belong somewhere then everyone else will too.

It's not a matter of feeling confident or having self esteem...not at all.

This is what I asked:
Anyone ever wonder or feel less cultured/ educated when entering a different envrionment? Just curious.

This was Too Cute's reply:
No. I have lots of self esteem and confidence.

Is to know everything and to always be so confident in your knowledge and surrounds not snotty?(It's what most call a 'know it all'.) You can be the most cultured, educated person and be in a new place and not be comfortable or confident or understand customs, language, etc...That's all I merely asked. Not if your happy with yourself no matter where you go. So that's why I replied in the manner I did.

You can. I don't.

When I go to new places I embrace the differences because I am confident in myself. I don't feel intimidated and made uncomfortable by them.

Particularly not in Canada.

Is to know everything and to always be so confident in your knowledge and surrounds not snotty?

No. It is not. It's called being intelligent and educated and confident.

(It's what most call a 'know it all'.)

Which is an expression usually used by those that don't know much and is more a reflection of the deficiencies in the person using the term than those of the person to whom it is refering.

You can be the most cultured, educated person and be in a new place and not be comfortable or confident or understand customs, language, etc...That's all I merely asked.

That is correct.

Not if your happy with yourself no matter where you go. So that's why I replied in the manner I did.

So you wanted yes or no answers?

There are those that feel uncomfortable regardless of whether or not they should feel uncomfortable. Then there are others that just don't feel uncomfortable because they are happy with themselves and confident.

Two types of people.

No judgement as to who is better or worse.

Just two different kinds of people.

You guys are funny...huddla huddla. I especially like how this turned into let's bash FiveB thread. Why don't Silera and Too cute post together instead of spliting up the double teaming towards me. I asked a question and you assume it was me feeling that way..... But let's just call me names instead right?!

Hate to tell you Five, But your posts are coming off as snooty. There is nothing wrong with having the confidence not to feel inferior. Whats more, being from another country doesn`t make you better educated.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that that's NOT what TooCute claimed.

I don't know what it says about you, but there are people who, when faced with immersion in a different culture, have the confidence and self-esteem to not feel LESS than that culture.
