Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar has been traded to the White Sox for pitching prospects.

The White Sox will announce the trade later this afternoon. The Mets acquired Royce Ring of Double-A Birmingham and Ed Almonte of Triple-A Charlotte. The Mets will eat the $3.9 million left on his contract this year, the New York Daily News reports.

Alomar, a bust in his one-plus seasons with New York, is hitting .262 with two homers and 22 RBI this season. His brother, Sandy Alomar Jr., has played three-plus seasons for the White Sox.

Alomar had been one of former Mets general manager Steve Phillips' high-profile acquisitions two winters ago, but the deal that included outfielder Matt Lawton, infielder Alex Escobar and left-hander Billy Traber being shipped to Cleveland never paid dividends for the Mets.

I was at the Mets game tonight and when they flashed the news of the trade on the Diamond Vision before the game, the dozen fans in attendance all cheered (me along with them!).

I also saw about a dozens signs at Shea that said, "Who's next?" Of course, this being New York, most of them read "Whose Next?"

I'd love if Benitez was next, but he just keeps killing his trade value with all these blown saves.
