Well, the First Reich was indeed The Holy Roman Empire which lasted about 1000 years, from the Rule of Charlemagne until the early 1800's when the Napoleonic Wars changed the landscape of Europe. The Second Reich, however, really began in about 1815 or so when Otto Van Bismarck began to unite the Confederation of German States into a single entity under the Kaiser. That lasted until the end of the First World War when Germany was defeated and the Weimar Republic began. Hitler's Nazi Party took over the Weimar Republic and dismantled it bringing the Third Reich. Hopefully, there won't be an attempted Fourth, Goddamn Krauts!
