Aside from being aestetically (did I spell that right?) pleasing to the eye, does Chrome actually have any kind of durability? Can it outlast Iron or Steel? Or does it just look pretty and have no other purpose?

1. Iron and steel rust.
2. I've never heard of magnesium being used in places other than wheels.
3. It is shinier that aluminum.

Oftentimes chrome is used to visually break up the surface of a car so it does not begin to look slabsided.

Actually aluminum can be polished to a mirror finish, but it's difficult to maintain.
Chrome is used on cars to protect the underlying metal, usually steel. Chrome doesn't rust. Chrome isn't very shiny either. A chromed part is first plated in copper, nickel, and then chrome. The copper aids in the adhesion of the nickel wich gives the part it's shine and the chrome, wich is very hard and corrosion resistant is just used to protect the finish.
