FAMOUS EVENTS
First travel agency started by Thomas Cook (1841).
French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Parisian showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed "bikini," inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week (1946).
First Wimbledon singles victory by an African-American, Arthur Ashe (1975).
In the East End of London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army. Determined to wage war against the evils of poverty and religious indifference with military efficiency, Booth modeled his Methodist sect after the British army, labeling uniformed ministers as "officers" and new members as "recruits" (1865).
Near Sojong, South Korea, Private Kenneth Shadrick, a 19-year-old infantryman from Skin Fork, West Virginia, becomes the first American reported killed in the Korean War. Shadrick, a member of a bazooka squad, had just fired the weapon at a Soviet-made tank when he looked up to check his aim and was cut down by enemy machine-gun fire (1950).
Hollywood stars Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra dissolve their marriage. The pair had been married since 1951. The marriage was Gardner's third and Sinatra's second (1957).
Elvis Presley records "That's All Right, Mama," which became a local hit. Presley had caught the interest of recording executive Sam Phillips when he cut a record for his mother's birthday in 1953. Phillips later asked him to record a few songs. Phillips was unimpressed with the session--which took place on July 5, 1954--until Presley and a friend started playing rhythm and blues between takes. Impressed with an improvised version of Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right, Mama," Phillips asked Presley to record the song, and two days later it became a sensation on a Memphis radio station (1954).
