As in, what is the origin of the word, and what does it mean? It seems like it would be Spanish or something.

from wordorigins.org:Barbecue
This American contribution to international cuisine actually originated in the Caribbean, and the word comes to us via Spanish from its Indian roots. The original sense of barbecue is that of a raised, wooden (later metal) framework used for either sleeping upon or curing meats. The Indians of Guiana called it a babracot and the Haitians a barbacoa. The Spanish evidently acquired the Haitian word and it came into English from the Spanish.

The earliest English cite, used for a sleeping platform, is from 1697. By 1733 the word was being used for an open-air, social gathering featuring the grilling of meat.

Barbecue has one false etymology that is commonly promulgated on the Internet and elsewhere. It is claimed that it comes from the French barbe (beard) and queue (tail); the idea being that an entire pig is roasted, from head, or beard, to tail. This is simply not true.

Uncertain.

Either from the french "barbe a queue" - whiskers to tail - eg like a whole roasted pig - or spanish "barbacoa" - a hatian word describing a way to roast fish. I think I heard Al Roker mention other things on his bbq show last week but I dont remember them.

Where does barbeque come from?

Typically, from the grill.

The caribbean pirates went on land and they roasted their animals in the fire because they didn't have an oven. Even the word Buccanneer came from that. They made a sort of tent and in the tent they held the meat and roasted it in there, that tent was called a buccan. Slowly the Buccan tents became famous in the European fleets and most words like b.b.q. come from that time, there were lot's of translations for it. It was spread through the world by the ships of wood, they didn't use the Buccan on board because the tent was to dangerous and it could catch fire, there was no other way to roast your meat in big parts on board the wooden ships so they roasted it on land and they took it with them in barrels with lots of salt. (salt beef and stuff)

I'm sorry guys, I made a mistake! The BBQ comes from the Indian word Barbacoa. They roasted their animals on it. Later the French invaders came along and wanted to make their own Barbacoa. But the only animals they had were goats. So they began preparing their goats. First the tail, it was sliced of. The last remainder of tail looked a bit like a beard. The French suddenly started laughing... A goat with a beard in his ass, or as they call it: a 'barbe au cue'. The word looked so much like the Indian Barbacoa that they called it Barbeaucue, wich seemed funnier to them. Later it became known as our modern BBQ. Once again: sorry for the mistake.

To learn the truth you must learn this: do I want to know the truth and can I handle the truth?
