View Full Version : All-Star Game, This Time It Means Something

This year the team that wins the All-Star game is the team that gets Home feild advantage at the World Series.
I kinda like the idea, but is it really fair? The World Series is everything you play for. You should earn the right as a team to make home field advantage for the World Series.
I dont know if I total like the idea or totaly hate it. I guess I'll have to wait till the World Series to see how I feel about it.

I like it too, but nah, "home field advantage" wasn't based on the better record, it alternated between the leagues each year.
I'd posted my thoughts about this in another thread, and since I'm feeling hungover and lazy today, I'm doing the copy and paste thing...

Last year's All Star Game was a disgrace. Something had to be done. Baseball is losing fans on a daily basis, and the interest in this game, both from fans and players, was going downhill fast.
Sure, it was a nice idea that every team be represented, whether the player was voted in, or true "All Star" caliber or not, and once there, the managers felt obligated to get each and every one into the game. It had gotten to be a joke. Players that were actually voted as starters by the fans were getting maybe one at bat a game before being pulled out, and the later innings just drug on and on with all the pitching changes trying to get each one an appearance.
And then yeah, the disaster last year where the game was actually cancelled in extra innings because both managers had used up their pitchers.
There was also beginning a trend by players not wanting to risk injury by playing in a frivolous game, or just wanting these few precious days off during the middle of the season rather than having to spend it in Milwaukee or some other God forsaken place, when they could feign a sudden illness or an injury and spend it at home with their families.
I personally used to love the All Star game, and I'm a huge baseball fan, but even I was beginning to wonder, "why bother?".
And as it was, "home field advantage" alternated between the leagues from year to year. After the LCS, the records were thrown out, and everything that team/league had done up to that point didn't matter. Now that's all changed. At least this way, the team/league that gets the home field, will have earned it.
It also means that the Managers and Players selected to represent the league have more incentive to actually play the game TO WIN, and not just to put on a "show". We'll be seeing more of the true All Stars facing each other, and managers using their best players just as they would in any game. Before interleague play and free-agency, this game used to be the only time that most of these players ever faced each other. This game used to be about pride, and that was all the incentive anyone needed. But unfortunately now that's not the case, and something had to be done.
I for one applaud the commish for actually recognizing and admitting that there was a problem and taking some sort of action, and I'm looking forward to seeing the game this year!

I'll only like it if the Yanks need to win game 7 at home, if they make to the Series. If a National league team wins the World Series in their final at bat in a game 7, I'll definitely hate it. (Unless the Red Sox are the other team)!

Oh, and how important is "home field advantage"? I found this interesting stat...
"The team hosting Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 of the World Series has won 15 of the last 17 titles and the last eight Series that went a full seven games."

I'm more likely to watch the all-star game, so I guess FOX wins.

since home team in series used to alternate, it was never really earned, so i guess this is good. how ever im still not very likely to watch it cause all star games are still usually crap. i watch the homerun derby and that celebrity thing and then wait for realy games to start

I actually think it's a good idea.
Instead of alternating from National League to American they have to duke it out in the All-Star-Game. Might make the game more fun to watch, and they might take it more seriously.

In my 27 years of loving, playing, and following baseball I always thought it was the first to make it into the world series game gets home field advantage.
Now that i hear it was alternated I say this is a great idea. Makes it more intresting to watch.

but the americna league and national league play by different rules. its not like the nba when ur just different sides of the country, or football where ur in 2 different conferences but u play by the same rules.
if the DH rule was abolished i would take u idea.

ok NOW we're getting somewhere. But instead of that how about this:
The League that wins the wolrd series gets all spring training games at home. That way the World Series will have something important riding on it

i would say the home field advantage should be during interleague play, which ever league has the most wins gets home field advantage, but for the all star game i dont know I just always looked at the all star game as like a a harlem globetrotter game..nothing serious
