View Full Version : Terminator 3 Spoilers/Plot Hole discussion

There are a couple of things I want to discuss about T3....
1) The movie opens up with John repeating Kyle's mantra about the future being what we make of it. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the entire movie in the first place?
2) The Hydrogen Fuel Cells. The first Terminator is crushed. The second was lowered into a vat of molten steel. Terminator 2 said himself that he's powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. So why the hell weren't there huge explosions like in this one?
3) The Particle Accelerator - how come, if the magnet is powerful enough to tear the T-X apart and rip the gun out of John's hand, that the backpack full of guns isn't attracted either?
4) Back to the Fuel Cells - if T3 pulled out his "backup" fuel cell to stop the T-X, why didn't he just shut down as soon as he did that?
5) If there was a massive explosion near the only entrance of the "Skynet Core", how did John and Kate expect to get out once the bombs were in place?
6) Crane trucks like that - they are designed NOT TO HAVE THE CRANE MOVING when they are in motion. Of course, this could be explained away by the T-X's nanites altering the transmission, but still.
Just some holes. Discuss amongst yourselves.

I thought the same thing while I was watching the movie. I forgot about the backpack, I thought a set of keys or even beltbuckles or rivits on their jeans would be enough to stick them to the accelerator. I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but I can't forget that unnecessary fukup.

1) The movie opens up with John repeating Kyle's mantra about the future being what we make of it. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the entire movie in the first place?
They'd already changed history twice. Hence, they were making their own future using the knowledge sent back.
2) The Hydrogen Fuel Cells. The first Terminator is crushed. The second was lowered into a vat of molten steel. Terminator 2 said himself that he's powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. So why the hell weren't there huge explosions like in this one?
T1 and T2 had the T-800. T3 had the T-850. Completely new model.
3) The Particle Accelerator - how come, if the magnet is powerful enough to tear the T-X apart and rip the gun out of John's hand, that the backpack full of guns isn't attracted either?
Ummm... good karma? :)
4) Back to the Fuel Cells - if T3 pulled out his "backup" fuel cell to stop the T-X, why didn't he just shut down as soon as he did that?
His systems may store enery for a period of time to dispose of damaged fuel cells, so the entire army doesn't get wiped by one damaged terminator. Ever notice that sometimes when you change batteries on a remote control or pda or other electronic device that it can store the info in memory for a limited time while the batteries are out?
here was a massive explosion near the only entrance of the "Skynet Core", how did John and Kate expect to get out once the bombs were in place?
There is no Skynet core. It was a distributed system. And it's a presidential bunker. One must assume that during a war, the entrace would collapse and have alternate exits.
6) Crane trucks like that - they are designed NOT TO HAVE THE CRANE MOVING when they are in motion. Of course, this could be explained away by the T-X's nanites altering the transmission, but still.
She fucked with it. Isn't that enough?
And now breathe deep and remind yourself... It's only a movie...

I saw this movie and thought it was cool except why was Arnold Shwarzkoff a robot? I didn't get that. Futhermore, how come Angela Chase didn't mention anything about Reyanne? Is she dead?

**SPOILERS**
I enjoyed this movie for the most part. Sure there were a few plot holes and story contenuity errors, but they also exsist in the first two and I love those movies.
Ok I think Jon pretty much covered what I was thinking. Also, yes, the particle accelerator thing was a pretty obvious flaw, but I'll hack it up to suspension of disbelief.
The biggest plot flaw for me was the fact that the T-850 is to have supposivly killed John in the future. I mean isn't it him that we see in the very beginning of the movie cheering in what I assumed to be the end of the war? Even if that wasn't the end, it seems in the past movies it's told like he is there when skynet falls. So if that is the case, how did a terminator kill him?
Besides those two things I thought the movie was great. Especially the end, I really didn't see that coming, but when I look back, it's really the way I wanted it to end anyway.
Another Contra and LSP joint production

The terminator obviously kills him after the scene in the beginning. It is possible that Skynet falls, but the terminator doesn't finish the job until after they bring it down.

How can the T-X and T-1000 go back in time, their "clothes" were made out of liguid metal and such right?
Only humans and living tissue incased terminators could go back in time?

Maybe T-X's liquid metal tissue can replicate human flesh well enough to allow her to go through time.
And if we're talking about suspension of belief, travelling back in time never seemed possible to me.
I dug the hell out of T3, simply for the fact that you feel like the terminators are actually being thrown around because most of the computer effects are hidden, unlike Matrix Reloaded, which I liked too.
And I'm pissed that I missed the first few minutes of the movie! I missed everything before the T-X stole some lady's car.
Any speculation as to what T-X did to the traffic cop, by the way?
"I like your gun" excites me more than "i'll be back" ever did!

In the 1984 Terminator movie, Kyle Reese tells Sarah that in the future, after judgement day, John Conner lead a human force and they "found the (skynet) grid and smashed it. Taking out Conner then wouldn't make a difference..."
If there was no grid...in the present...how can it be destroyed in the near future.
My question is...at the beginning of the movie the "Terminatrix" has a list of people she has to kill and starts to...teenagers that eventually become important "Lieutenants" in the future. How come that plot point just died and never was addressed again. Once the Terminatrix focuses on John Conner, (except for Claire Danes) she doesn't go after them...and what about the ones she kills before she bumps into John Conner?

Once T-x sees "Primary target" on her screen, it's her only focus. If the primary target is dead, then the others don't even become lieutenants, because there is no one to command them.

thanks for the response...but why is killing them even an objective if killing John Conner makes them unimportant?

Because John Connor Dr0pped off the face of the earth. He became a drifter. Arnie mentions this. The terminatrix coming back in time to the point where John and Kate meet again allowed her to find and target him.

you are totaly right with these points but the whole point of the first line in the movie is that he is wrong.. that there are some thing you cannot change. that WAS the point of the movie. That there is FATE. as for your other comments I think you are right on . But I liked the movie none the less. WAY better then Hulk

The Terminator mentions to them that they will wed and have children who will be important to the cause. He is concentrating on them and not the others because of this. Any one going to see T6?
I am, and always will be,in a state of sulky dissatisfaction.

Am I the only one who thinks that time travel into the past is flawed? I'm not a scientist, so I can't explain it too good, but it seems more realistic that you could travel forward in time and the past can't really be changed.
Ok, so the question now is, especially for hollywood "Will there be a T4 and will arnold have a part in it?"
I say yes and no.
But who would watch John Connor and the rebels fight terminators? It would have to be a really appealing cast to continue the franchise.

Alright, bust THIS...
In T2 they technically prevented the robot future from happening, right? Fuck this "branches of time" noise, that's one step away from alternate realities and dimensions...EARTH 2, BEEEEYATCHES.
Anyway, so they prevented the future from happening. Which means that there's no reason for future John Connor to send back his best friend to impregnate John's mother and be John's father (WAAAAAUGH!!!). So negating the future negates Furlong/Stahl-John Connor's very existence! Shouldn't he have blinked away as soon as the T-800 and T-1000 were both melted?

Judgement Day was inevitible. John Connor will lead the resistace against the machines and he will send his friend back to protect and impregnate Mom. Therefore it doens't matter that the T-800 and T-1000 were both melted... the future is fixed for John.

Fate may be fixed, but the little circumstances may be changed. Maybe since T-x killed a couple of John connor's lieutenants, a totally different guy goes in the past and meets john's mother?

Time Travel to the past always involves inescapable paradoxes.* Unfortunately (or perhaps wisely) none of the movies even attempted to deal with these issue.
*Actually, they're only unavoidable if you ignore superstring theory and the creation of alternate universes with each change in event. So all events are covered as they all occur simultaneously. (The first quantum computer has already been made!) Of course the Hawthorne effect would make it a very crowded multiverse.

If you want to get into it, our existence is just as incredibly confusing, because it involves our ancestors basically being born from nothingness.

I finally got to see T3 the other day. I liked it. I thought about a lot of the holes in the story that Tenbats brought up, but Jon answered them. I don't think it was as good as the first two, but I still liked it though.
