My favorite Twilight Zone of all time was Mr Death, starring Robert Redford as "the" Grim Reaper. Showtime's Dead Like Me is similar in that Mr Death isnt a guy in a black hood with a scythe...he looks like anyone else you see...even a 19 year old girl. Georgia Glass (brady bunch fans may get the reference) is the recently deceased 19 year old, killed by a toilet seat falling from the sky, who discovers that it is her destiny to take the roll of Grim Reaper in her new...afterlife. Without going into too much further detail, I just wanted to recommend this new show to my fellow Showtime-subscribing board members. Try and watch the pilot before moving on to the next one (theres only been 2 eps so far), as it sets everything up nicely. It's a comedy/drama about death--more light hearted than 6feetunder. Watch it!

This sounds like something I would like because it's not on regular tv. On Showtime, at least there is a chance of blatant nudity, wonton violence, gratutious sex, and willy nilly foul language. When is it on?

...

Chris, I've been a huge fan since the show first aired. It has already become my favorite show. I believe they are repeating the first two episode or the latest tonight. Check your local listings. I am already part of the DLM forum/messageboard.

The concept is pretty original with alot of diverse characters (Jasmine Guy as Roxy, Rebecca Gayheart as Betty, Mandy Patinkin as Rube). It's about Grim Reapers that have to take souls and watching how people die (the revolving door and Mason's drill deaths are two of my current favorites). Also living amongst the living and working normal jobs to survive. Watch for the toad... ::whistles:: Wierd ain't it?

Here are my two favorite DLM quotes:

"Life is like an assembly line. First you have a great idea, a master plan... you make a prototype and then you start mass producing, billions and billions... they don't last forever and well it's your job to take them off the shelf. You are helping to restock life." --Rube

"Monotony is the mind killer." --Mason

PS: I was gonna start a thread today about it but you already have done one yesterday :)

The show Dream On was the reason I got HBO, perhaps this show should be the reason alot of people finally get Showtime. It may be too early to do this (only 2 shows in), but I'm gonna be brave and say that if they keep up with the quality of writing they have exhibited this far, if you cant see it on tv--buy it when it comes out on dvd. It's that good.

-SG, watch episodes 4 and 5 closely... you'll see a main character leave and a familiar face from television debut.

-I post on their board frequently and I found it funny that they De1eted a comment I made about a possibility of George and Mason "being" together. :)

Tonight's episode was more drama than comedy, although naturally it had both. My only real loud laugh came at the beginning at the "free the bear" protest. I like how we've been learning little tidbits about each grimreaper's past. As for who's leaving, it better not be Gayheart; she's gorgeous! and funny! But I do notice her name comes after the opening credits (ala "guest starring", without saying it). sigh.

Well...RFMark got me thinking, so I did some research. It's not exactly hidden who the new reaper will be--it's all over the internet, u just gotta keep your eyes open. In case you wanna be surprised, I wont spoil it for you here. I'll just say she comes from another high-quality show, and if Gayheart IS the one who's leaving (I only found rumours, no fact), well, she definately fills the beauty void, we'll have to see about the comedy. I wonder if she'll wear her black wig...

I have not seen this series yet, but the ads indicate that it is a rip off of one of my favorite films, a little-seen wonderful movie called Afterlife from Japan. I hope those fellas are collecting royalty rights on this ...

ChrisTheCop

Sam, although it's a similar subject matter, this series is in no way a rip off of Afterlife, which focused more on the dead people's lives and their progression to heaven. The dead in Dead Like Me have one or two lines, if that; it's not really about them. There have been numerous films about what happens when youre dead, many even involving those who take you there (Buck Henry in Heaven Can Wait being one of my favorites), but to say one is a rip-off of another is like saying GoodFellas is a rip off of The Godfather. If you enjoyed Afterlife, I'm willing to bet you'll like Dead Like Me. Try it, you'll like it.

Wow, Maria and Leo are fans of DLM. It's about time some more of my RF peeps started watching this beautifully scripted program. Maria, Mason's drilling into his brain for a permanent high and reporter Bill Black's pissing away his life (literally) on live television no less are my two favorite death senarios.

Again, I am on DLM's official board and here are a few of my favorite new quotes from last week's episode.

"F*ckable's Promotable!" --Betty

"I make my face look like this and the concerned words come out." --Rube

Wow, not much buzz on this board about the best new show on cable tv, DLM!

The last episode was very good.

Come on, I thought we would have more women loving this show because of an English guy named Mason that hides drug up his ass and has to Dr0p his trousers for a 'thorough' check up at the airport as well as a bitchy Jasmine Guy as meter maid. The star George ain't half bad either.

The colorful language and the dark use of comedy should be so appealing to this board! They will replay the 4th episode, 'Reapercussions' tonight at 10PM and I promise you, you will be hooked!

Yup Laura Harris wass the naked alien chick from The Faculty... also was my favorite kid soap opera back in the day, Nickelodeon's Fifteen. Her boyfriend on that show was a drug addict and on DLM she maybe some competition between the George-Mason possible couple.

Overall another fun episode. Daisy is coming on board to shake it up further and Betty takes the plunge.... (Bye Bye Rebecca Gayheart. I wonder why she left... she must be kicking herself for leaving cuz it has been an instant hit).

How about Fiona's flower tattoo? Where do you think that was. Ahhh wink, wink, nudge, nudge? HA! :D

Or just Laura Harris (aka Daisy) saying she blew all of these celebrities like Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, etc. She even W.O.W.ed a nice sports car to hitch a ride but eventually stole it with Georgia in back. That is my kind of woman... Mason keep trying your luck! :p

The only incidental similarity that Six Feet Under has to DLM is that they show you how the people die. Aside from that, there is a night and day difference between the two shows. I like Six Feet Under but this show is far better.

RonFez Mark I agree with you on George's dress at the wedding. And I was laughing at the site of Mason with that huge bag of pills. The actress reaper Daisy is pretty funny with all the famous people she's done. Her telling the story of giving Erole Flynn a handy in the last one had me cracking up.

I have a question for those who saw the episode before last, the one where someone dies at George's house and the other reapers are taking tests.

In the episode they keep showing this woman in a red dress talking to some guy at the diner. They focus on them throughout the episode but nothing becomes of what the significance of their interaction was (if any). I've asked several people if they knew what it meant and no one else seems to know either. Is there a deeper meaning to it that I'm missing?

They focus on them throughout the episode but nothing becomes of what the significance of their interaction was (if any). I've asked several people if they knew what it meant and no one else seems to know either. Is there a deeper meaning to it that I'm missing? reefdwella, this is quite simple. Me being the All-Knowing DLM fan that I am, the woman in the red dress and the man that she was seated with at that cubicle in Der Waffle Haus was used specifically to represent the Edward Hopper painting, "Nighthawks" (the diner painting in Rube's book). As Rube gazed at that piece of art it seemed to me and my other DLM friends that it represented what Rube was missing. He might have used that couple to recall a past relationship (see his 1880s looking picture in his wallet) or maybe is projecting himself as part of that couple. That seems to be their main purpose in that episode entitled, "Nighthawks."

Thanks for asking.

Now, as for where I've been Mark, I've been assigned to a new detail at work and have been busy settling in. I try to visit RF.net a few times a month for now.Okay Chris, just wondering bud.

The finale was brilliant btw... Mason finally scores with the lovely Jewel Straite, the Goth record store cashier, Delores gives George her job back after coming with her to take her sickly cat Murray to the vet, we discover that animal reapers exist and in kid form, George died in 2003 (would not corrolate with the Mir toilet seat incident in 2001) and Reggie and Joy get closer together after all their previous arguments.

i guess i missed "vacation." i havent seen the finale yet either though, i'm going to watch the replay tonight. without Oz, Sopranos, and now Dead Like Me i cant figure out why i have premium cable anymore. Okay phix, where to start?

Basically Joy's and Clancy's marriage is breaking down as Reggie and Joy become surprisingly close. The Lass family decides to go back to their family cabin for the first time ever without George. Clancy seems to have his phone go off alot and we all assume it is Charlotte (AJ Cook, his alleged graduate student mistress). Clancy seems to be missing alot and the majority of the interaction at the cabin is between Reggie and Joy. They go fishing along with JD their dog. Fishing was shown in a flashback and it was George's favorite thing to do when they were younger. It was sweet to see the healing process finally begin.

The Reapers this day have no assignments but have to do paperwork at Der Waffle Haus for some reason. According to Rube, they all have to type up the "Last Thoughts" of all the souls taken. Good Lord! Rube wanted them to do this all manually but George suggested that they can go to her old job, Happy Time (remember she quit cuz she wanted more money to get a bike but quit 5 minutes after getting there?).

She still had the keys and the office at the time according to her is that it is empty... well they thought. Crystal the creepy large receptionist was there! And no she is not a reaper... well they did not say she was anyway. They get paired up in teams, one reads the thought and the other types it on the computer.... Mason and Daisy, Crystal and Roxy and George and Rube. Mason continually tries to hit on Daisy but it doesn't work. One part that was very interesting was when Mason was reading off the last words... they all seemed to be... "I'm alone" "Why did I leave Lucy" "Why me?" It was all sad and as Mason read them all off as Daisy typed them in you could see her expression change. She seemed depressed. She told Mason that she needed a break and if he could finish the rest. He agreed and then to Mason's surprise Daisy asked if he wanted to go to her place and drink Jameson. He definitely agreed. Daisy tries to disappear into the copier room to be alone but George is there because Rube does not trust computers and wanted copies just in case. Daisy goes off on a surprising stellar tangent about life and get this in her own words... "We are all temps." <~That's fucking deep... we all die.... *shudders* They cut back to Mason happily trying to finish his work so he can maybe finally "get some" from Daisy but oddly enough... he sees Daisy's name and her Last Thought was, "Why hasn't anyone loved me?" (Did she commit suicide although it listed something else as her cause of death?) Mason saw that and couldn't go through with it and finished his job. The next time he saw Daisy he told her that it is fine and that they'll have a drink another night. He helped her put on her jacket and said he would walk her home.

Soo fucking emotional. I cried... I admit it. Incredible episode brother.

The finale is the One Year Anniversary of her death so that would make her at least 19 by now.

OK I missed the replay...is there another night this week it comes on?
It replays tomorrow SG. Tuesday at its regular time. Don't miss the season finale... you'll regret it. Oh yeah, don't read my previous thread then cuz I basically said what happened, hehehe. Enjoy. Happy Thoughts and Happy Hunting. ;)

Not hard to admit, I was on the verge that night too. But the night I actually teared was the finale. We've all lost someone, and I'm no different. The drinking of champagne at the grave and the name chiseling after 1 year all hit home. This series has not only been incredible fun, but also, perhaps oddly, healing for me. Meeting death head on has been very therapeudic. WATCH THIS SHOW people!!!

I finally got around to watching the finale yesterday with my girl and we both loved it. RFMark, I never got to see your comments on the Nighthawks episode till today because I didn't want to open this thread again until I saw the finale. I didn't want any spoilers. I watched Nighthawks for the second time last weekend and I noticed the same thing that you bring up about the painting itself. I also get the sense from the finale that Rube has some issue in his past or a lost love that prevents him from finding someone else to be with. My guess is it will be revealed over time.

I liked how in the finale we got to see them talking more about other reapers in the area, as well as reapers for pets. I imagine this will open the door for more characters next season.

It was also great to see the guy who played Augustus on Oz in the epsiode....man, he dies in like every cable show he goes on now.

Exactly. I remember loving Rebecca Gayheart's character and being pissed that they were replacing her with Daisy. I ended up loving Daisy just as much.

series is up on hulu now. Im gonna check it out.

The SERIES was absolutely amazing, and was going places.
The movie, on the other hand, although it wasnt the worst movie I've seen,
certainly was a disappointment. It took too long explaining itself early on,
perhaps hoping for some viewers who hadnt already invested time in getting to know
the characters via the show. You'll find, watching the show, that an integral part is the
relationship between Rube and George, and we were unfortunately robbed of that
in the movie version. As much as I like Desmond from Lost, he was no replacement for Rube. They may have done better keeping Rube in the shadows, just not appearing
in the movie, but with us knowing he was still around controlling his group of reapers.

I put the following complaint in spoilers just in case:
During the series, I was really enjoying getting to know the backstories of the characters. It seemed that maybe Roxy and Rube knew eachother in their lives. And Daisy's flashback possibilities were unending. What a complete farce Showtime made of this terrific series. Theyre lucky they have Dexter now, cuz if not I'd never watch them again.

Watch it!
