Trying to decide between the two. Is there that much difference when downloading a 3 minute song or video clip? I KNOW they are both better than dial up. Help me.

Cable is usually faster and easier to set up but it's shared with several people in an area, so if everyone on your street has Cable its going to be slower than if its just you(probably not even enough for you to notice though)
DSL is slower than Cable but its a direct line from the nearest C.O. which makes it more secure.
I'd go for Cable personally.

i've been very happy with the cable modem... i believe the cable companies had issues with IP assignments and you had to turn your pc off, power cycle your modem, wait for the "online" light, and then turn your pc back on. I haven't had to do that for approx 8 months to a year now...

I've used both cable and dsl. For what you are going to do, the speeds are comperable, but I found I had many less problems with Cable.

I tried DSL for a few weeks and now use Cable.
I've had a few problems where the cable company had to come fix it, but it's faster than DSL in my case.

Ez one... cable. I've had cable for a couple months now and haven't had a problem yet. make sure you get a good modem when you sign up for cable though. I have a surfboard that's put out by motorola. I think its the best.

cable is way better i had verizon dsl at one point and i was lucky to get over 100k on a download. now i have road runner and with regular options on i get like 170 k a second. if u have someone who knows thier stuff u can go to dslreports.com they have some tweaks there that can improve your download via registry tweaks

Well, since I install them for a livin'....
Cable modems are MUCH better. I work for Cablevision (Optimum Online) and we've had it for about 2 and half years. It has been very reliable, and has only gone down MAYBE 4 or 5 times in that span. And that was because of system maintenance.
Also not that long ago, Verizon was thinkin' of discontinuing the DSL service alltogether, because it had alot of problems. Honestly, I do not know if it has gotten better.
Wormwood and Funkman were correct, but
we've opened the bandwith big time, so the sharing with others, and the IP issues are not of real concern.
And of course, you don't have to worry about tying up the phone line.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no salesmen, but it's really good stuff. To prove it, this year we just started digital cable service, but I would say to hold off on it at the moment. The more people that get it, the more glitches there are (channels freezing, boxes resetting on their own, etc.) It'll be fine soon, once we open the bandwith. I think that's the problem anyway.

Cable is much faster for most downloads. However, if you're going to be downloading songs or files from Kazaa, for example you won't see much of a difference. There are download speed caps imposed by the program. (There is software to get around this - usually found in sites that offer downloads to Kazaa Lite 2).
For downloading regular files such as the weekly critical Upd@te to windows security, or porn, you'll find cable much faster.
