TORRANCE, California (AP) -- Buddy Ebsen, best known for his role as suddenly wealthy mountaineer Jed Clampett on the TV series "The Beverly Hillbillies," has died, according to a hospital nursing supervisor in Torrance, California. He had been hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.
Ebsen began his television career with a nine-year stint as Clampett in 1962, when the series premiered. He later took the title role in the CBS detective drama "Barnaby Jones," which ran from 1973 until 1980.
Ebsen wrote two books, including an autobiography, "The Other Side of Oz," and "Kelly's Quest." The former title refers to his shot at portraying the Tin Man in "The Wizard of Oz" -- a role he was set to perform until a reaction to the makeup nearly killed him.
